Multiple security agencies working in tandem have succeeded in thwarting a domestic terror group with alleged links to Daesh, just in the nick of time.

In a night-long joint operation by UP and Maharashtra counter terrorism officials, 26-year-old Nazim Shamshad Ahmed, and two of his associates were picked up from their rented apartment in Rashid Compound in Mumbra, following inputs from the Intelligence Bureau. Irfan Ansari and Gulfam Ansari were released after interrogation, but Ahmed, who the agencies consider to be the leader and main recruiter of the group, was handed over to UP ATS on a transit remand.

Cell phones, information material and other electronic gadgets were seized from their flat.

Police investigating the case of alleged sex cult Shifu Sunkriti and its founder Sunil Kulkarni say that he has been posing as a psychiatrist without a medical degree. The state government has sent a bill of Rs 142 crore to the Centre for keeping 41 toll booths on highways shut for 21 days after demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes on November 8 last year. Fourteen booths directly controlled by the public works department and 27 booths operated by its undertaking, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), were closed during the period from November 9 to November 30.

“We will be required to compensate the contractors for loss of their revenue during this period. But considering the fact that the state’s finances are under tremendous strain, it would not be possible for the state to directly compensate the contractors,” said a senior official from the public works department.

Depressed Chef's Suicide Bid Thwarted by Younger Brother at Bandra Residence

A 20-year-old chef from a prominent Juhu restaurant tried to commit suicide yesterday, but his efforts were thwarted by his younger brother and some alert neighbours.

According to cops, the incident took place around 3 pm, when the chef, identified as Rahul Mullah, was alone at his Bandra (West) residence. "His brother was out for work. Rahul tied one end of a scarf to an iron rod on the flat's ceiling and hanged himself by it. His brother reached home after a few minutes and rang the bell several times, but it went unanswered. He suspected something was wrong and started to break open the door. On hearing the commotion, their neighbours too joined Rahul's brother and together they barged in. They found Rahul hanging from the ceiling in an unconscious state and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where the doctors managed to save him," an officer from Bandra police station said. Local residents, including the scriptwriter Salim Khan and yesteryear Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman, have demanded shifting of a public toilet installed on the Bandstand promenade in suburban Bandra.

Incidentally, last year the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai had roped in actor Salman Khan, Salim Khan's son, to promote its drive against open defecation. Salman's NGO 'Being Human' is supporting the cause.

However, Khan senior is not happy with location of the public toilet which is near his residence. "It's not that we are opposing installation of toilet blocks at Bandstand. We support this move. But if the toilet is built in the middle of promenade, there will be a mess and it will create nuisance," Salim Khan told reporters.
