A recent audit report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had labeled the food served by the Indian Railways, in both trains and railway stations as "unfit for human consumption".

In another example of the poor quality and hygiene of the food served by the Railways, a lizard was found in a vegetarian biryani served on the Howrah-Delhi Poorva Express. After consuming the biryani, a passenger reportedly fell ill and complained later of stomach ulcers and infections.

Following complaints about the dismal quality of food, the Indian Railways retaliated, asking passengers to bring their own food. AK Mittal, Chairman of the Railway Board, told CNN-News18:

Passengers should carry their own food. Our kitchens are being revamped and that may take over a year.

Moreover the Railway Board said that revamping their kitchens would at least take a year. After the CAG report, the railway ministry had claimed that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) would soon be setting up a new catering policy.
