In a goodwill gesture, Indian Army on Thursday, 21 November, repatriated a resident of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir who had inadvertently crossed over to India in May this year, ANI reported.

Ahmed had inadvertently crossed over into the Indian side of LoC without seeking requisite permission in May 2019.
Shabir Ahmed, 32, hailing from Panjkot in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir had crossed the Line of Control (LoC) on 17 May, according to ANI.

A police spokesperson told PTI that Ahmed was arrested near Dilar check-post in the Karnah area of Kupwara when he had crossed over into the Indian side without seeking requisite permission.

He said a case under relevant sections of the law was registered in police station Karnah and Ahmed was taken to a hospital for medical examination where doctors reported that he was suffering from a mental disorder, according to PTI.

"He was given medical care and was hosted with dignity and respect. He was provided with clothing, lodging and medical care. Once he was stabilised PoK authorities were approached for repatriation by the Indian Army," the Army said, according to ANI.

Ahmed was repatriated on humanitarian grounds at 1:30 pm on Thursday, at the Tithwal crossing point in Tangdhar sector by the local civil authorities in Tangdhar, to Chilehana in PoK. Pakistani authorities accepted Ahmed and appreciated the humanitarian gesture, reports said.

ANI reports said that Ahmed was also given a gift as a farewell gesture.
