1. Shiv Sena Leader Shot Dead by Bike-Borne Assailants in Mumbai

Shiv Sena leader Sachin Sawant was shot dead allegedly by two bike-borne assailants on Sunday, 22 April, in Mumbai’s Kandivali locality.

The 40-year-old Sawant, who served as a deputy shakha pramukh in the Shiv Sena, was travelling in his car at Gokul Nagar when he was approached by two men on a bike and shot at in the chest, media reports pointed out.

The shooting is said to have taken place around 8 pm. A police official told by The Indian Express:

Four rounds were fired at Sawant, who collapsed on the ground. He was taken to Shatabdi hospital, but was declared brought dead.

2. Amid Outrage Over Kathua, 4 Rape Cases Lodged in Single Day in UP; Victims in 3 are Children

At a time of outrage over the Kathua rape and murder case, which spurred the Union Cabinet to approve promulgation of an ordinance allowing courts to give death penalty to convicted child rapists, three among four complaints of sexual assault registered across the state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday involved minor victims.

According to data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2016, incidents of rape of children increased by over 82 percent compared to 2015.

In Rampur, a 7-year-old girl was raped by a 19-year-old, who lured the girl, who was playing outside her house, to a nearby farm and sexually assaulted her, according to the police.

3. Koregaon Bhima Witness Found Dead

The body of a 19-year old woman, who had witnessed the burning of her family’s house-cum-hotel by a rioting mob during the Koregaon Bhima caste clashes, was found floating in a well near a rehabilitation site for the violence victims on Sunday.

Pooja Suresh Sakat, a class XI student, had approached different government offices over the last three months to get a new home for her family. The family had also lodged an FIR with the police in February, saying that some local villagers were issuing threats and harassing them as Pooja was witness to the violence.

4. 26-year-old Alleges Rape by Lawyer in Court Complex

A 26-year-old woman has alleged that she was raped by a lawyer inside his chamber at Rohini court complex in Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The 60-year-old advocate is absconding.

Confirming the incident, DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said a case of rape has been registered and teams formed to apprehend the lawyer.

The survivor is contesting a case against her in-laws for maintenance after the death of her husband. The mother of three had hired the advocate to plead her case.

5. Woman ‘Kills’ Her Newborn in Thane

A woman was arrested by Kalyan police for allegedly killing her six-day-old daughter on Sunday. The woman allegedly killed her daughter by digging her nails into the girl’s neck. The reason, police said, was poverty.

According to Khadakpada police, the mother, identified as 27-year-old Vaishali Pradhan, was arrested on Sunday evening after a neighbour caught her in the act. “Pradhan had her hands around the baby’s neck while the newborn was bleeding. The child was taken to a private hospital but was declared dead,” an officer said.

6. Man Dragged 200m Under Bus, Killed

A 22-year-old man was killed after a speeding cluster bus hit and dragged him for more than 200 metres on the road in east Delhi’s Indraprastha Extension on Saturday evening.

The horrific accident was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the gate of a residential society near the accident spot. In the CCTV footage, the accident victim is seen trying to cross the road as he is hit and then dragged by the orange cluster bus. The footage shows a few men trying to signal the bus driver to stop. Locals told the police that the bus driver did not stop the vehicle and continued to drag the victim.

“The man was dragged for almost 200 metres. The bus driver tried to flee with the bus. But some locals caught him and handed him over to the police,” said Pankaj Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east).

7. Minors Sexually Abused, 3 Held

Three persons were arrested in separate cases under the Pocso Act for allegedly harassing and abusing children between Saturday night and Sunday in Kolkata.

Pulak Dasgupta, in his late 40s, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually harassing the daughter of his paramour at their house in Survey Park. The woman lodged a complaint alleging that the suspect often harassed the child. She also said that Dasgupta had tried to take the child’s photographs and videos for pornographic purposes.

8. Man Kills Father-in-Law Over Domestic Abuse Complaint

A 47-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his son-in-law in east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar, Sunday afternoon. Police said the accused was facing charges of domestic violence filed by his wife. DCP (east) Pankaj Kumar Singh the victim, Prabhu Dayal, was taken to LBS hospital with a stab wound in his chest, and died later. “A case of murder has been registered and a search is on to nab the accused, Neeraj Kumar (27),” DCP Singh said.

Dayal is survived by his wife, Anita Devi, and four daughters.  Police said his eldest daughter married Neeraj in December, 2016, against their wishes. Soon after the wedding, Dayal’s family said the couple got into frequent fights.

9. BMC Employee Demands Sex from Colleague, Held

A 50-year-old BMC employee who used to allegedly stalked, abused and passed lewd messages to a woman colleague has been arrested.

According to officials of Shivaji Park police station, the accused, Kishore Yewalkar, had been assigned the task of carrying out census since 2011 in Mumbai. The police said that the BMC had formed a team under Yewalkar for the special task.

The complainant was one of the members in the team. “All the members had exchanged their mobile phone numbers for coordination purpose, but the accused started giving missed calls to the woman and gradually started sending her messages and stalking her.” said an officer.
