1. This Time, It’s in Maharashtra: Five Lynched Over Child Lifting Rumours on Social Media

In another case of mob violence triggered by social media posts, five people were lynched in Dhule district of Maharashtra on Sunday morning over suspicion that they were part of a gang of “child lifters”, police said.

The incident took place in the tribal hamlet of Rainpada in Sakri taluka, about 325 km from Mumbai. The mob reportedly comprised over 35 people, including some children.

2. Police Look for ‘Tour Guide’ After Italian Woman Alleges Rape in Taxi

Police are looking for a man who claimed to be a tour guide and allegedly raped a 37-year-old Italian woman inside a moving taxi in Juhu last month.

The alleged incident took place on 14 June when the woman, who is employed with a private firm and stays in south Mumbai, decided to take a guided tour of the city starting from the Gateway of India.

3. Eight Cow Vigilantes Who Lynched Muslim Trader in Jharkhand Get Bail

The Jharkhand high court on Friday granted bail to eight of 11 convicted cow vigilantes serving life imprisonment in Hazaribag central jail for lynching a 55-year-old Muslim trader, Alimuddin alias Asgar Ali.

A special fast track court in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, in a record six months, on 16 March convicted 11 accused. Five days later, it sentenced them to life imprisonment.

4. Gauri Lankesh Murder: SIT Uncovers Covert Pro-Hindutva Outfit That Recruits Assassins

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the cold-blooded murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh has revealed many chilling details.

Sources in the SIT say that Parashuram Waghmore, the man accused of shooting Gauri, was shown videos of her speeches to instigate him.

“When search operations were conducted in several locations in Karnataka, several gadgets and diaries were recovered from the accused. A video was found in Amol Kale’s tablet. It was a speech made by Gauri Lankesh in Mangaluru, about rejecting communal elements. This video was shown to Parashuram Waghmore and he was told that Gauri was against Hindu gods and must be killed,” SIT sources revealed.

5. Enraged to See Daughter Talk to Lover on Phone, Andhra Farmer Kills Her

A farmer who did not approve of his daughter’s love affair with a man, allegedly beat her to death in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, police said on Sunday, 1 July.

Tondepu Kotaiah of Totaravulapadu village bludgeoned his daughter Chandrika to death with the wooden handle of an axe on Saturday, a day after she celebrated her 24th birthday, the police said.

The investigating officer in the case, VNN Murthy, said Kotaiah did not approve of his daughter’s love affair.

6. Handwritten Notes Indicate Deaths of 11 Family Members Found Dead at Home Linked to ‘Mystical Practices’, Say Delhi Police

Handwritten notes found at the house in north Delhi’s Burari where 11 of a family were found dead, indicate observance of spiritual or mystical practices by the family, police said on Sunday.

Ten people were found hanging — blindfolded, gagged and hands tied — on the first floor of the house whereas the dead body of an old lady was found in an adjacent room in the house in Sant Nagar.

7. Man Killed by Contract Killers; Five of Family Held

Tired of his "physical torture", family members of a 24-year-old man from Vasaiallegedly got him killed by hiring contract killers, police said on Sunday, adding that four accused have been arrested.

Palghar district rural police arrested the accused last Friday after the body of the victim Rohit Chowdhary was found floating in a quarry at Bhoidapada on 27 June, a police official said on Sunday, 1 July.

8. Sex Racket Busted in Kolkata, 18 Arrested

Police busted a sex racket and arrested 18 persons including nine sex workers from Kolkata's Park Street area, a senior officer said on Sunday, 1 July.

Acting on a tip off, officers of Beniapukur Police Station conducted a raid on the third floor of a building in 82 Park Street on Saturday evening and arrested the persons for allegedly running a brothel in the guise of a beauty parlour.

9. Trader Shooting: Two Contract Killers Held

Police on Sunday, 1 July claimed to have solved the murder attempt on a business man here with the arrest of two "contract" killers from Biharallegedly engaged by a business rival.

Surajbhan Singh and Vibhuti Kumar Singh have been arrested for firing at Kanhaiyalal, a native of Rajasthan.
