1. Hasini Rape, Murder Case: Death Sentence For Accused Techie

Almost a year ago, Hasini, a seven-year-old girl, was found raped and murdered in Chennai. Twenty-three-year-old techie, S Daswant, was taken into custody in connection with the crime, but let out on bail citing “technical ground" in September. Days later, he committed another alleged murder – that of his mother.

Delivering the verdict in the double-murder case, a Chengalpet court in Chennai on 19 February, Monday, convicted techie Daswant. The court examined 30 witnesses, 45 documents and 19 pieces of evidence. The court also sentenced him to death.

2. MP BJP Leader Accused of Molesting Acid Attack Survivor

Police in Madhya Pradesh have registered a case against a BJP leader, who enjoyed the status of minister of state as the vice-chairman of a government body, for allegedly molesting an acid attack survivor.

Taking serious view of the matter, the state government on 19 February, Monday, removed Rajendra Namdeo, the accused, from his post as the vice-chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Silai Kala Mandal.

In the complaint, the 25-year-old woman alleged that in November last year, Namdeo called her to a hotel room near the Bhopal Railway Station and tried to molest her but she managed to escape, said Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh Bhadauriya. She had approached Namdeo to get some work, he added.

3. Mumbai Woman Killed For ‘Refusing to Have Sex With Facebook Friend’

A woman was murdered on Sunday in Nallasopara allegedly by a man she befriended on Facebook when she refused to have sex with him. The man fled his home after strangling her with a shoelace, the police said.

Ankita More (20) of Vashi was found dead in the Taniya Monarch building in Nallsopara East by residents hours after she was spotted entering the home of Haridas Yergude (21). He was arrested later on Sunday night and confessed the murder.

“The two had been chatting regularly on Facebook. On Sunday, the accused invited the woman to his home. The accused wanted to have sex but the woman refused and decided to leave. However, he forced himself on her and when she resisted, he strangled her with a shoelace,” said an officer at Tulinj police station.

4. Two Men Accused of Rape, Murder of 5-Year-Old Lynched

A suspected rapist and murderer of a 5-year-old girl and his accomplice were beaten to death by a mob in Tezu town of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, the police said.

According to the police, the duo Sanjay Sobor, 30, and Jagdish Lohar, 25, were dragged out of police custody by the mob and beaten to death on the streets and their bodies were dumped in the market area.

The duo had allegedly abducted a 5-year-old girl on 12 February. Her body was found five days later. The police had arrested the two on Sunday and had produced them in court — which sent them to police custody.

5. Jharkhand: Woman, Daughter Branded as 'Witches', Paraded Tonsured

A woman and her daughter were branded as 'witches' by their family and allegedly forced to eat human excreta at Dulmi village in Sonahatu area, about 70 km from the state capital, on Thursday. The victims were allegedly beaten up by their relatives before they were tonsured and paraded through the village.

Even though the incident took place on Thursday, a police complaint was filed on Friday. The victims – Kari Devi (60) and Basanti Devi (35) – told the police that their relatives blamed them for their misfortunes and accused them of practicing 'witchcraft'.

6. Drug Peddlers Held With Heroin Worth Rs 20 Cr in Delhi

Three inter-state drug peddlers were nabbed by the Delhi Police Special Cell with heroine, the police said on Monday. The police recovered five kg of heroin estimated to be worth more than Rs 20 crore.

The arrested were identified as Ram Nath, 26, Virender Pal Singh, 29, and Parvej Khan, 64 — all residents of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh.

On 13 February, the Special Cell received a tip-off about two of the accused coming to Bhagwan Mahavir Marg in outer Delhi to deliver a huge consignment of drugs to a Delhi-based drug dealer, a senior police officer said.

7. Juvenile Convicted in 2009 Noida Gangrape, Sent to Reform Home For 3 Years

A Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), on 19 February, convicted a man for the gang-rape of a 24-year-old MBA student in Noida in 2009. The man, who was a minor when he committed the crime, was ordered to be sent to a reform home for three years for rehabilitation, saying there was "unquestionably a ring of truth" to the prosecution’s version.

In February 2017, a trial court had acquitted nine other adults accused in the case, on the grounds that the identity of the real culprits could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, represented by Special Public Prosecutor Neelam Narang, the incident took place on the evening of 5 January 2009. The prosecution's appeal against the trial court verdict is pending before the Delhi High Court.

8. Man Abruptly Kicks Co-Passenger Out of The Train, Victim Dies

A 23-year-old man died after he was kicked out of a moving train by another passenger, without any apparent provocation, near Sukhi Sewania railway station on the outskirts of Bhopal, railway police said on Monday.

Ritesh, the victim, was sitting near the door of a general coach of the Kamayani Express when Rajmal Pal aka Rajju (27) kicked him out, said a Government Railway Police (GRP) official.

According to Riesh's cousin who was accompanying him, Pal said before kicking Ritesh that “I am going to die anyway, so I am killing you”.

9. Bombs Recovered at Gaya Middle School For Second Time in 20 Days

Two bombs were found at a government school in Paraiya block of Bihar’s Gaya district on Monday.

Police said the explosives, including a can bomb, had been planted on the main gate of the government middle school at Manjhar village, about 30 km from Gaya. This was the second time in 20 days that bombs were found at the gate of the school, they said.

“We have called the bomb disposal squad of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) from Paraiya to defuse the bombs,” the police added.

Earlier, two live bombs were detected near Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya on 19 January during Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama’s visit to the Buddhist pilgrim town .
