The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has been issuing frequent updates on its Facebook page about the water levels of the Idduki dam as it inches towards its full capacity.
A move which has been garnered much appreciation from social media users, even as the residents of Idukki, Thrissur and Ernakulam remain worried about a possible flooding in the event of the shutters of the reservoir being opened after 26 years.
The KSDMA’s social media team has been issuing minute-by-minute updates on Facebook including coverage of the water level at the Idukki reservoir, status of other reservoirs as well as common guidelines for safety and advisories against rumours.
They are also responding to queries of concerned citizens about the situation.
On Monday, 30 July, an orange alert was issued by the Kerala government as the water level of the Idukki dam touched 2,395 feet, just nine feet short of the danger level. The authorities took to Facebook to inform the netizens about the situation.
While the post received the usual replies of concerned citizens thanking the authority for keeping them duly informed, one comment stood out in the haystack. Jose Mishty, a Facebook user, responded to the authority's post by saying, "God be our strength."
The KSDMA responded to the comment with a rational reply saying, “Science, experience and planning is the collective strength of our state.”
The response has garnered over 3000 reactions on Facebook.
