The three men who allegedly gangraped a 23-year-old woman in an auto-rickshaw in Gurugram on 29 May have been arrested, police said on 8 June.

The woman said she was going to her parents’ house in Khandsa village around midnight after a fight with her husband. The woman, who was travelling with her infant daughter, took an auto-rickshaw which was ferrying three men. She told the police that the men began to molest her as soon as she sat in the vehicle.

As she resisted and her daughter started crying, they smothered the infant and threw her out of the vehicle. The victim told police that she was raped by the accused inside the auto-rickshaw on the old Khandsa road, close to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Hours after she was allegedly gangraped, the woman went back to the spot where the perpetrators had earlier thrown her nine-month-old daughter, picked her up in the middle of the road and went to a hospital in the metro.

The doctors declared the infant dead. The woman did not believe it and travelled with the dead child to the MG Road metro station.

Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar confirmed that the victim had travelled with her dead child in the metro the day after the incident, and that the police learnt about the crime only after the victim’s husband approached them.

“Her husband and Gurgaon police received the victim from MG Road metro station after she returned from hospital in Delhi. Following that, police conducted post-mortem of the infant,” Khirwar said.
