A low pressure area is expected to develop by Thursday, 25 April, gather momentum over the next few days, and become a cyclone by Saturday. Models suggest cyclone will likely hit land just south of Chennai.

The IMD warned that this could cause rough seas off the coast of Tamil Nadu, with gale force winds reaching up to 80 km/h.

It has also forecast widespread rainfall in both Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The rainfall will fill up reservoirs across Tamil Nadu, which has been suffering from water shortages for the past few months due to scarce rainfall and depleting water reserves.
