The Border Security Force (BSF) helped reunite a 70-year-old woman with her family one-and-a-half years after she went missing.
Jayamma went missing from her village in Hassan, Mysore, The Times of India reported. Jayamma’s daughter Sunanda was told on 20 October that her mother had been found by BSF troops in Assam, 3,337 km away from their village.
BSF DG JC Nayak told Sunanda that the troops found her mother near an outpost in Karimganj district on 18 October. It is not clear how the elderly woman reached Assam.
“When they made inquiries, she spoke in a language the jawans could not understand. But they knew it was a south Indian language and called colleagues from the South. Constable Sahil Zabiulla, who knows Kannada, spoke to her and told us she was from Hassan district in Karnataka.”DG JC Nayak, as quoted by The Times of India
The commander then made a video of the interaction between Jayamma and the constable and uploaded it on social media. Simultaneously, the police established contact with the authorities in Hassan.
“On 20 October, Mandiganahalli panchayat member Santosh saw the video and the photo, identified the woman, and informed her daughter Sunanda. Thereafter, he informed the police station as well. Since the company commander was in contact with police, a video call was arranged between the mother and the daughter the same day.”DG JC Nayak, as quoted by The Times of India
On 21 October, Sunanda flew to Guwahati in Assam to reunite with her mother. All thanks to the BSF troops!
