Garima Abrol, wife of late Squadron Leader Samir Abrol – who was killed in the Mirage 2000 fighter plane crash on 1 February – has cleared the Services Selection Board in Varanasi and might be joining the IAF's Air Force Academy in Telangana's Dundigal.

Retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra on Twitter announced that she would join the Indian Air Force (IAF) in January 2020, calling her a “woman of exceptional substance”.

On 10 February, just days after her husband's death, Garima had put up an emotional post on Facebook.

"How many more of these pilots have to give up their life to shake you up and make you realise there is something really wrong in the system?" she asked. In the post, Garima vowed to fight against the fallacies in the system as soldiers continued to lose their lives in the country.

“I am Garima Abrol… I am the wife of Martyr Squadron Leader Samir Abrol… whose tears are still not dry… It still hasn’t sunk in that you are gone. No one has the answer to my questions. Why YOU?” she had written.

Samir Abrol, from Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, was commissioned in June 2008 and was from the Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment of the Air Force.

A look at Squadron leader Abrol’s Facebook profile had reflected his love for flying. In 2013, he wrote, “When the airplane makes a sudden noise, you think to yourself, ‘Well, I lived a good life!’”
