Gangster Jaipal Bhullar Killed in Shoot-Out With Police

One police personnel is also reported to have been injured.

Gangster Jaipal Singh Bhullar, along with associate Jassi Kharar, wanted for an alleged role in the killing of CIA ASI Bhagwan Singh and Dalwinderjit Singh, were killed amid a shoot-out in Kolkata.

The encounter was a joint operation of Bengal police and the Organised Crime Control Unit of Punjab Police, with the STF leading the charge, and reportedly took place at Shapoorji Abasan in New Town, Kolkata.

Vineet Kumar Goyal, ADG of West Bengal STF informed ANI: “We had info that some criminals were staying here. When we came for raid, we found Jaspreet and Jaipal, who are wanted in several cases in Punjab. We tried to arrest them but they resisted and fired at us. In retaliation, we also fired and they were shot dead”.

He added that Rs 7 lakh in cash, 5 weapons and 89 live rounds of ammunition were seized from the site.

Further, Goyal said, “an inspector has been hospitalised after being injured. Both pf them had bounty of Rs 10 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs respectively and were involved in many cases including murder and bank robbery.”

BACKGROUND

Ludhiana Rural Police had on Sunday, 16 May, booked Jaipal Singh Bhullar and three of his associates for the alleged murder of CIA ASI Bhagwan Singh and Dalwinderjit Singh.

The FIR, as per The Indian Express, which was filed on the complaint of Home Guard Rajwinder Singh, said that Bhullar and his associates had opened fire at the police party, after ASI Bhagwan Singh identified the men and tried to arrest them.

The FIR named his accomplices, which included Baljinder Singh alias Babbi of Malla Khurd (Moga), Jaspreet Singh alias Jassi of Kharar (Mohali) and Darshan Singh of Sahauli (Ludhiana), The Indian Express reported.

Bhullar and his associates were subsequently booked under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 397 (robbery or dacoity with an intent to cause grievous hurt), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from duty) and 186 (voluntarily obstructing public servant in discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 25 and 27 of Arms Act.

Ludhiana rural SSP Charanjit Singh had spoken to The Indian Express and said that Bhullar is wanted in at least 15 cases of murder, attempt to murder, robberies among others.

According to the news publication, Bhullar has been officially on the run since 2016, after allegedly killing his rival gangster Jaswinder Singh alias Rocky of Fazilka and ‘confessing’ about it on Facebook.

He was also purportedly involved in a series of robberies, including the alleged looting of Rs 1.33 crore from a cash vehicle of Axis Bank near Chandigarh 4 years ago, and the daylight robbing 30-kg of gold, amounting to several crores, from IIFL branch on Ludhiana’s Gill Road in 2020, The Indian Express reported.
