Amid accusations of religious bias at Hyderabad Central University, fresh rows with religious overtones has been reported by The Times of India, after a newly placed Shiva ling and Nandi structure was noticed outside the university.

Earlier, on Buddha Jayanti, two monks were disallowed from entering the campus. Following this, around 50 students and teachers marked Buddha Jayant outside the gate, when they noticed the ling.

Many have alleged this as a sign of the growing Brahmanical hegemony since the university authorities sought the dismantling of the unauthorised tents where the deceased Dalit scholar, Rohith Vemula spent his last days.

The Times of India quoted Arpita Jaya, a key member of the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, as saying:

We were in for a rude shock as soon as we saw the religious structure installed right outside the main gate. We were not aware of any such structure before. While the university is targeting the Rohith stupa and the Velivada, this structure goes to shows what’s happening on campus.

The religious structure caused quite a stir among students since as per constitutional laws, universities are required to maintain a secular environment.
