In the last phase of Lok Sabha elections, on Sunday, 19 May, Farhan Akhtar tweeted an appeal to Bhopal’s citizens, not to vote for BJP candidate Pragya Thakur to save themselves from another ‘full-of-gas tragedy’. He tweeted with the hashtag ‘Say No To Godse,’ alluding to Thakur’s recent controversial remark in which she called Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse a “patriot.”

However, the constituency had already gone for polling in the sixth phase, on 12 May, making Akhtar too late in his appeal.

Twitter had a field day over Akhtar’s blunder.

A user called out Akhtar’s “seriousness” over the issue since he didn’t even know when Bhopal was scheduled to vote.

Users also pointed out that it was the Congress government that “released the person responsible for the tragedy”, referring to the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Another user also condemned the actor for his ‘insensitive’ use of the Bhopal gas tragedy to further a political agenda.
