Mumbai Mirror reports that the likes of superstar Salman Khan and Uddhav Thackeray’s son and Yuva Sena President, Aaditya take ‘pride’ of place on the traffic police’s list of offenders who haven’t paid the fines despite being issued e-challans. Traffic police officials have alleged that the e-challan system is being misused.
Fines to the tune of Rs 119 crore have yet to be procured from e-challaned Mumbaikars for offences like speeding, disregarding the zebra crossings, jumping the signal, driving in the ‘no-entry’ direction and more.
The vehicles of other biggies that have made it to this list are those of state transport minister, senior BJP leader Diwakar Raote and MNS founder Raj Thackeray, Kapil Sharma, and ones used by Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, and state BJP spokesperson Ram Kadam amongst others.
E-challans were introduced in October 2018. According to a right-to-information query, over 53 lakh e-tickets that add up to Rs 172.44 crore in fines were issued till June this year. Fines worth only Rs 53.8 crore have been recovered. Many motorists allege that they have been erroneously fined. So much for the virtues of ‘Digital India’!
Rs. 4000 is yet to be recovered from a vehicle registered in the name of Arbaaz Khan Production Pvt Ltd. When Salman Khan’s staff was contacted, one of them said that Salman and his family members have received no intimation regarding the overdue fines.
While Aaditya Thackeray’s vehicle has been levied fines against six traffic violations, Kapil Sharma owes Rs. 2000 to traffic cops.
Actor Arjun Kapoor paid the fine for three cases of speeding, immediately after the Mumbai Mirror correspondent contacted him.
