An Indian Army soldier and three Jaish-e-Muhammad militants were killed overnight in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said on Tuesday.

One of the militants killed was the nephew of JeM chief Masood Azhar, Talha Rasheed, a JeM spokesperson said. The other two militants were the commander for south Kashmir, identified only by the pseudonym “Muhammad Bhai”, and Wasim Ganai, a local resident, The Indian Express reported. The three militants are also believed to have been involved in the attack on a police post near Rajpora a few days ago.

Azhar’s nephew was targeted as part of a police operation against the JeM militants who have crossed the border “to carry out high-profile fidayeen attacks,” the report said.

This Proves That Militants Are Getting Support From Across the Border: Army Chief

Army chief Bipin Rawat on Tuesday said that it does not matter whether the militant was Masood Azhar's nephew or not, since the forces “aim at neutralising all terrorists no matter where they belong.”

Talking about the M4 rifle that was recovered, Rawat said, “This makes it clear that terrorists are getting support from across the border.”

Operation Launched on Monday Evening

Security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Kandi belt following information about the presence of some militants.

The search operation had led to a gunbattle after the militants fired at the security forces. Following special intelligence inputs, troops of the Rashtriya Rifles, state police, and the Central Reserve Police Force had surrounded Aglar village on Monday evening.

As the security forces closed in on the militants, they were fired at, triggering the gunfight which was on till late night on Monday, reports said.

A civilian also suffered injuries in the crossfire and was shifted to hospital. Internet in Pulwama district has been suspended.
