The first cutoff list for admission into Delhi University for 2018, is expected to be released late on Monday, 18 June. Over two lakh students have applied for approximately 56,000 seats at Delhi University.

According to what several university officials have told The Times of India, this year’s cutoffs are reportedly expected to be higher than that of the previous year. This year will also see the universities release only five cutoff lists, following which there will be centralised counselling where the respective universities will try and fill up the vacant seats.

Additionally, in a bid to do away with the confusion that comes with multiple cutoff lists, Delhi University will share the lists with the principals of the respective universities beforehand, to allow changes if any.

According to a report in The Hindu, the central administration has asked the university to come up with “realistic” cut-offs, since only a few seats get filled in the first three lists in several off-campus colleges.

However, principals of institutions under Delhi University have said that student applicants should expect higher cutoffs than the previous year. Anju Srivastava, principal of Hindu College, told The Times of India that colleges were yet to release tentative lists. Jaswinder Singh, principal of SGTB Khalsa College, told the newspaper that “cutoffs may be marginally higher than last year”.

According to the report, the cutoffs are expected to be the highest in the Arts and Commerce streams, which in 2017 were marked at: 99 percent in BA (Hons) Political Science, 98.75 percent in English, 98.25 percent in Economics and 98 percent for Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and BCom (Hons).

A Delhi University official told The Times of India that most of the universities release the first list with high cutoffs so as to gauge the demand for the courses.

By the second list, however, the cutoffs are lowered, albeit marginally. This is done to avoid over-admission and to get the best of the lot. But usually subjects like English and BA programme will have higher cutoffs as the number of applications is high.
