Home to some of the most lavish wedding parties in the country, Delhi may soon face restrictions on the number of guests or the quality of food served at similar gatherings.

According to The Economic Times report, the Aam Aadmi Party Delhi government told the Supreme Court that it is working on a policy to cap both the number of guests and the quantity of food served at such gatherings to “limit food wastage and reduce traffic congestion.”

The government’s statement came in response to the Supreme Court, which had on 6 December, expressed concerns over the wastage of food and mismanagement of water at such large gatherings. “It is unacceptable in a city which is witnessing drinking water crisis and even alleged starvation deaths," the apex court had said.

The counsel appearing for the Delhi government said it would take around eight weeks for the Delhi government to develop a policy framework on the matter. Further, the government discussed the matter with the Lieutenant Governor, who seems to be on the same page with the AAP government.

According to the government, it is looking at regulating the number of guests, while bringing in provisions to enable the supply of leftover food to NGOs that feed the destitute.

We can have guest control on one hand and regulation under the Food Safety and Standards Act where institutional arrangements can be made between the caterers and NGOs, who are providing foods to the destitute.
Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Dev told the apex court.

Kumar had further told the court that some caterers were reusing food left-over from previous gatherings at different gatherings. This, he said, had posed a great health hazard.

According to The New Indian Express, Kumar also told the apex court that, “treatment of waste water is also a serious issue, which led to environmental degradation. Whatever directions the Supreme Court will give, we will follow. We will have to tackle these two issues.”
