Six men accused of killing a dalit youth in Punjab's Mansa district were arrested by the police on Friday.

Sukhchain Singh, 22, an alleged illegal liquor trader, was killed by a rival group following a conflict last week. The group also chopped off one of his legs.

“Though Sukhchain's friends managed to flee, the other group brutally killed him with sharp-edged weapon,” Mansa SSP Mukhwinder Singh said. His body was recovered from one of the accused's house with injury marks.

His body was cremated on Friday as the family had earlier refused to do so until all the six accused had been nabbed. They also demanded Rs 25 lakh as compensation and a government job for one of the family members.

The deceased’s kin would receive Rs 10 lakh, out of which they received Rs 5.62 lakh on Friday.

Condemning the brutal murder, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh said, “I will meet the youth's family and assure them that the culprits will not go scot-free.”
