1. Unnao’s ‘HIV-Peddling’ Quack Arrested

Police on Wednesday arrested the quack who has been accused of infecting at least 58 people with HIV in Bangarmau tehsil of Unnao district by allegedly using the infected syringe and needles.

Police identified the accused as Rajendra Yadav, a native of Shiv Baksh Kheda of Unnao district. Investigations revealed that he had studied only up to Class XII and worked at a BAMS doctor's dispensary as a helper before opening his own makeshift clinic on station road area in Bangarmau.

"He has been booked under sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease deadly to life) and 308 (culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code and section 15(3) of the Indian Medical Council Act.

2. Belur Gas Leak: FIR Against Factory Owners For ‘Illegally Storing’ Cylinders

The Belur Police on Tuesday lodged a case against three owners of a factory named Sandip Industry, located in the Bajrang Bali scrap market, in connection with a gas leak incident that resulted in 30 people being hospitalised.

“Yes an FIR has been filed under various sections of the IPC and Fire and Services Act. We are looking for those who have been named in the FIR,” Raj Karan Nayar, DC North (Howrah) told The Indian Express.

According to police sources, the fire department had lodged the FIR against the owners of the factory for illegally storing cylinders. The cylinder, from which chlorine gas reportedly leaked, was sent for forensic examination. “Prima facie, it was chlorine gas that had leaked.

3. Kasganj: Police Arrest Two Other Accused, Recover Weapon Used to Kill Chandan Gupta

A week after Saleem Javed, the main accused named in the FIR of Chandan Gupta's death was arrested, Kasganj police on Wednesday night claimed of arresting his two brothers who also are accused in the case.

Identified as Wasim Javed and Naeem Javed, the two were booked after FIR lodged by Chandan's father Sushil Gupta under IPC sections 124A (Sedition), 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others), 04 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

4. Swapnil Sonavane Murder: 15-Year-Old’s Parents Say Police Protection Missing, Fear Attack

The parents of Swapnil Sonavane, a 15-year-old Dalit boy who was killed in 2016 allegedly over an inter-caste relationship, claimed that their police protection has been taken away even as the family continues to get threats. Although the police have said the security provided to the family remains unchanged, the family has alleged that the guard has been gone since 1 February.

On 19 July 2016, Swapnil and his parents were summoned by the family of a 16-year-old girl, with whom he was in a relationship. Near the girl’s house in Nerul, the elder brother and father of the girl allegedly assaulted Swapnil causing his death.

Hours before the death, the boy’s family had approached Nerul police with a complaint against the girl’s brother for assaulting Swapnil a day before.

5. Woman Arrested For ‘Running Prostitution Ring’

A 60-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly running a prostitution ring at a housing society in Thane. Police said they rescued another woman and recovered a diary with details regarding all customers in the past two years.

The Thane Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC) raided a flat on the second floor of Manas Cooperative Housing Society in Charai, Thane. “The house had been converted into a brothel, with beds even in the kitchen. We also found contraband and unused boxes of condoms on the premises,” Inspector Ravindra Daundkar, head of AHTC, said.

The arrested woman was identified as Sumati Mahinkar, a widow living alone on the same premises.

6. Delhi Kidnapping Case: Was Slapped When I Dropped Glass of Milk, Recounts 5-Yr-Old

A day after five-year-old Vihan Gupta was rescued by the Delhi Police Crime Branch, he told officers about his 12-day ordeal of being confined in an apartment. According to an investigator, the child gave a day-by-day account in the presence of his parents. He told them that he was first kidnapped on a bike, and then transferred to a Swift Dzire, with the kidnappers telling him that they were taking him to his parents.

“He told us that the kidnappers fed him chocolates and toffees the first day he arrived, but also instilled fear in him every time he would cry,” an officer said.

“He told us that on day two or three, he dropped a glass of milk by mistake and was slapped by Pankaj, one of the accused… he told us that while Pankaj and Ravi would scare him, Nitin used a friendly approach, and would console him when he would cry,” said an officer.

7. Three Women Arrested For Robbing Jewellery Stores in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane

Three women – two sisters and their aunt – were arrested for allegedly robbing more than a dozen jewellery shops in Raigad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The women were caught on CCTV cameras slipping in the jewellery and have confessed to committing the crimes, said the police.

The accused – Pinki Gaud, Jyoti Solanki and Nirmala Salunkhe, 55 – are residents of Ambernath area in Thane. Gaud and Solanki said they are 28-years-old and are sisters, but the police are verifying their statements. The police said the three got help from two men, who are wanted, in the crime.

8. 20-Year-Old Peddler, Who Used to Sell in Posh Societies Near Mumbai, Arrested

A 20-year-old youth, a Class 6 dropout, was arrested on Tuesday for selling cannabis (ganja) for the past one year. The police have recovered five kg ganja, whose market value is Rs 3.4 lakh, from him. It was found by the police that the accused used to sell ganja to only children and youth from well-to-do families.

Mahesh Choudhary is resident of Dombivli and has told the police that he peddles drugs for his household expenses. The police also seized a car, which the youth said belongs to his friend.

When police questioned the friend, he said was not aware Choudhary being a drug peddler.

A police officer from Thane crime branch said, “Choudhary used to sell ganja to residents of posh housing societies so that he could sell at a higher price and earn more money.”

9. Rhino Killed in Jaldapara, Six Arrested With Horn

An adult rhino was killed and its horn was chopped off at Jaldapara national park on 5 February. The carcass of the animal was buried at the Torsa riverbed in BD -1 compartment inside the forest. The Jaldapara forest division officials have arrested six persons over the past 24 hours and recovered the horn.

A .303 rifle was also recovered from inside the forest. The arrested persons have been identified as Marto Riba from Arunachal Pradesh, Sanjib Lama from Siliguri, Raju Rava from Jaldapara, Sevok Kami and Rupesh Rava from Kodalbustee and Rajib Rava from Banerhat.

Incidents of poaching are not new for Jaldapara. Over 70 rhinos have been poached at Jaldapara in different times from 1951.

In April 2018, two rhinos were poached in Gorumara national park. The Jaldapara national park is one among four forest tracts in India where the one-horned rhino can be seen in the wild.
