1. Man Gets 10 Years in Jail for Sister-in-Law’s Rape

A sessions court in Pune has convicted and sentenced a 50-year-old man to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment for repeatedly raping his minor sister-in-law for more than two years after she attained puberty.

The incident came to light in April 2015. Additional sessions judge Mohammad Nasir M Saleem found the accused guilty of the offence under Section 376 (2) (f) (i) of the Indian Penal Code which refers to rape on a woman by a relative or a person in a position of trust or authority towards such woman and rape when the woman is below 16 years of age.

Similarly, the court also found the accused guilty of offence under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act which deals with sexual assault.

2. Four Held for Stabbing 47-Yr-Old to Death in Delhi

Four men have been arrested and a juvenile apprehended in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old financier in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, police said.

“On 14 March, Dinesh alias Chandan (22) was arrested and a juvenile was apprehended from Chirag Delhi on the basis of a tip-off. During questioning, they revealed that they killed Sanjay Chawla on the instructions of Rohit Thakur (30) and Rajender (33), for which they received Rs 35,000 each. Subsequently, the knife used to stab Chawla, and the clothes worn by the accused at the time of the incident were recovered. Rohit, Rajender and Manjot Singh (48), a gemstone dealer, have been arrested”, an officer said.

3. Cheated in Fake Job Racket, UPSC Aspirant Kidnaps Five-Year-Old Boy to Recover Lost Money

Delhi Police on Wednesday said they had arrested a civil services aspirant who allegedly kidnapped a five-year-old boy for ransom to recover money he had allegedly lost to a job fraud weeks ago.

The 27-year-old ‘kidnapper’, Asif Saifi, had demanded Rs 20 lakh from the child’s father, but was caught after he gave away his location, police added.

Police said Saifi was arrested and the boy rescued from Dadri, Saifi’s home town. “He was inspired by Bollywood films to plan the kidnapping”, said AK Singla, deputy commissioner of police (northeast).

4. Two Arrested With Fake Passports

The Mumbai police on Thursday arrested two men for allegedly procuring passsport using fraudulent documents in separate cases.

While the Azad Maidan police arrested Mohammed Khizar (55) from Bhayander and booked him for cheating and under the Foreigners Act, the crime branch arrested Bangladeshi national Abdul Hussain Shaikh (40) from Andheri.

Khizar has acted in a few B-grade Hindi films, said police. “During questioning, he confessed that he had given fake documents to an agent who made the passport for him. We are verifying his claims and looking for the agent. There seems to be no terror link,” said a senior police officer. Khizar’s daughter lives in Sri Lanka, while son is in the US.

5. Three Held for Helping Murder Convict Escape From Delhi Hospital

A month after murder convict Sandeep Kumar Dhillo (40) escaped from custody during a visit to Maulana Azad Medical College, the special cell in a joint operation with the crime branch has arrested three men who allegedly helped him escape. Police said Salman alias Bagira was first arrested.

“A team of the inter state cell of the crime branch received an input that Salman was coming to meet an associate on Wednesday evening at Dwarka’s Sector 19. A joint team conducted a raid and arrested him. He disclosed the names of two of his associates, Deepak Ladda and Rohit, who were then arrested,” a senior police officer said.

Dhillo escaped from police custody after his associates threw chilli powder at three police personnel escorting him. The officers were suspended following the incident, police said.

6. 21-Year-Old Woman Sentenced to Death for Killing Mother, Sister in Gujarat

A 21-year-old woman was on Thursday sentenced to death by a court in Gandhidham town of Kutch district for killing her mother and sister.

Additional Sessions Judge DR Bhatt awarded the death sentence to Manju Dungaria (21), after convicting her for the murder of her mother Rajiben (60) and sister Aarti (27) in February, 2017.

“The court considered the incident as ‘rarest of rare’ and awarded death sentence to Manju under section 302 of the IPC. In addition, she was also sentenced to a five-year jail term under section 307 (attempt to murder), IPC,” public prosecutor Heteshiben Gadhavi said.

7. 1-Yr-Old Raped by Neighbour

A one-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in east Delhi's Preet Vihar, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the victim was sitting outside her home and her mother was busy cleaning the home, they added.

The accused identified as Aslam took the victim in his room and allegedly raped her, the police said.

The incident came to light after the victim's mother informed the police. An FIR was lodged on the basis of her complaint and the accused was arrested, they added.

8. Student Commits Suicide at IIT-Roorkee

A 21-year-old engineering student committed suicide by allegedly hanging himself from a ceiling fan in a room at IIT-Roorkee’s boys hostel on Wednesday evening, police said.

The deceased student has been identified as Abhijeet Singh Bansiya. While no suicide note was found in the third year student’s hostel room, Station House Officer of Roorkee’s Civil Lines police station– Sadhna Tyagi– said that the preliminary enquiry suggests that Bansiya could have been grappling with depression.

9. Visually-Impaired Man Among 2 More Held for Raping Minor Girl

Police on Thursday arrested a teenager and a 47-year-old visually impaired man in connection with the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl, taking the number of persons in custody to four, an official said.

The victim is eight months pregnant.

The accused arrested today are identified as Vijanand Ahir, who is visually-impaired, and a 17-year-old youth.

On Tuesday, police arrested Nanji Javiya (67) and his neighbour Arvind Kubawat (60), residents of Babaria Colony in the city, in connection with the rape.

With Ahir, the juvenile, and Kubawat being already arrested, police are now looking for two more persons for their role in the incident.
