1. Crimes Against Women and Children On the Rise

Violent crimes against women and children are on the rise in Maharashtra, showed provisional data for 2017 submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The data, which was part of the state’s economic survey 2017-18 tabled in both Houses of the state legislature on Thursday, 8 March, showed that 32,100 cases of crime against women were recorded in 2017, compared to 31,275 in 2016 and 31,126 in 2015. The data also showed that 15,534 cases of crime against children were registered in 2017, compared to 13,591 in 2016 and 13,941 in 2015.

2. Gurugram: Main Accused Held in Blind Twin Murder Case After a Year, Hunt on for Accomplices

A man accused of a double murder, who had been at large since the incident last year, was caught by the Gurugram police on Thursday, 8 March, from Sikanderpur.

A countrymade pistol was recovered from him and a case under the Arms Act was also registered against the accused.

The accused has been identified as Jagganath, alias Jaggi, and is a resident of Sheohar in Bihar. He was arrested by the anti-snatching cell of crime branch 10, Sushant Lok for the murder of Kailash, a rickshaw puller, and Pradeep, a daily wage earner – both hailed from Bihar.

3. Doctor Gets Life Term for Killing Her Twin Babies

A Delhi court found a doctor guilty of fatally injecting her minor twins with anaesthesia before trying to commit suicide, and awarded her life imprisonment on Wednesday, 7 March. The accused was employed as a gynaecologist in a government hospital and had pleaded temporary insanity arising from depression for the crime.

Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Matto held the 40-year-old woman doctor guilty under Section 302 (murder) and 309 (attempted suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. "I hold the accused Roopa Singh guilty of the murders of baby Tanya and Twinkle by way of repeatedly injecting Sucol and such act of commission of murder or attempt to commit suicide cannot be justified after any such altercation at home of the accused,” said Matto.

4. Tamil Nadu: Pregnant Woman Riding Pillion Dies After Police Kicks Her Bike, Cop Arrested

Protests broke out in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli after a pregnant woman died when a traffic policeman allegedly kicked the motorcycle she was on. The woman, identified as 30-years-old Usha, was four months pregnant and was riding pillion with her husband when the incident occurred. The officer named Kamaraj was arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The cop was allegedly chasing the bike to catch hold of the husband who was driving without wearing a helmet. “It is a clear case of murder. The traffic police initially allowed us to go. But this official chased us and kicked the bike, resulting in my wife’s death,” Usha’s husband Raja told a television channel on Thursday, 8 March.

5. Aarushi Murder Case: CBI Moves Supreme Court Challenging Talwars’ Acquittal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday, 8 March, filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the Aarushi and Hemraj double murder case by the Allahabad High Court.

The Talwars’ daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj were found murdered in their Noida flat in 2008.

The move comes almost a month after the Law Ministry advised the CBI to file the special leave petition.

6. Mumbai: Bag With Rs 6 Lakh ‘Stolen’ From Businessman’s Car

The Mumbai police is on the lookout for a gang that allegedly stole a bag containing Rs 6 lakh in cash from the vehicle of a 55-year-old businessman. Police suspect that the accused were following the complainant, Himanshu Bora, as he was returning from his dry fruit shop at the APMC market in Vashi. He was on his way home in Wadala. The Mankhurd police have registered an FIR and are looking for the accused.

An officer linked to the probe said the incident took place on Tuesday morning when Bora was returning from his shop at the APMC market around 7.30 am in a Swift Dzire car. He had kept a bag with Rs 6 lakh in cash next to the driver’s seat. As he reached the Vashi bridge, two bike-borne men intercepted him and told him that his car’s back tyre was punctured. The 55-year-old then went looking for a car mechanic. When he returned to his vehicle a few minutes later, he found that the window next to the front seat had been broken and his bag had been stolen, the police said.

7. 2 Men Arrested for Planning to Kill Woman Witness in Murder Case

Two men were arrested for allegedly planning to kill a woman, who was a witness in the murder case of her brother, police said on Thursday, 8 March.

The accused, Rovin alias Mohan and Kartik alias Lokesh Kalyan, were arrested in Rohini on Tuesday by a team of Delhi Police's Special Cell, said PS Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). Two .315 bore pistols and four live cartridges were recovered from their possession, he added.

8. Man Who Helped 4 Youngsters From Mumbai Join ISIS, Shot Dead in Kabul

Afghan national Rehman Dawlaty, who was booked and wanted by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for helping four Kalyan youth join Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), was shot dead by the Afghan forces on 30 May 2017.

The news of Rehman’s death was confirmed by a relative of his wife, Yasmeen. He added that Rehman married her in 2011 and lived in a rented flat at Kopar Khairane for two months before they left for Afghanistan.

“It was the third day of Ramzan, when he was killed in an encounter outside his house in Kabul. We were informed about his death two months later by his brother Roshan,” the relative said.

9. 14-Year-Old ‘Gangraped’ in Bulandshahr; Three Accused Held, Hunt on for Other Three

Three persons have been arrested after family members of a 14-year-old girl in Bulandshahr’s Mudi Bakapur village lodged a police complaint, alleging that she was gangraped on Monday evening.

According to police, the girl’s family approached them Tuesday evening and lodged a complaint, naming six persons. The complaint stated that while she was on her way to a friend’s house Monday evening, a man gagged her, dragged her to a secluded plot, where others joined him and two of them took turns to rape her.

The Class 9 student told The Indian Express that she was going to get a project file from her friend, who stayed 200 m away from her house.
