QCrime: Asaram, Aides Booked for Rioting; 10 FIRs Against ‘Godman’

1. Asaram, Daughter and Aides Booked on Charges of Rioting

Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, his daughter and 10 others have been booked on charges of rioting and criminal intimidation based on a complaint by the father of a girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Asaram, police said on Sunday, 24 November.

"On 22 December, a magazine was distributed along with various newspapers claiming that charges levelled on Asaram Bapu are false, and he is being framed as a part of a conspiracy. After this, the father of the girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Asaram, lodged a police complaint saying although Asaram is lodged in jail, his aides are trying to kill them," Superintendent of Police (city) Dinesh Tripathi said.

Acting on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC pertaining to rioting and criminal intimidation against Asaram, Bhagwan Bharti (Asaram's daughter) and 10 other people, SP Tripathi said.

The survivor, now 20, was allegedly raped by Asaram at his Jodhpur ashram in August 2013.

2. 10 FIRs Against 'Godman': Police in a Fix as Women From Ashram File Cases Against Kin

A week after raids were conducted at an ashram run by self-styled godman Virender Dev Dixit, Delhi Police has found 10 FIRs against him under sections of rape and abduction. However, the complaints pouring in, now, aren’t against him: of the 80 complaints received so far, sources said, most were filed by women inmates of the ashram against their own family members.

Police sources said that in 2016, a woman inmate had been found dead at the ashram. But during the investigation, “no foul play” had been found.

3. Man Run Over, Mob Torches Killer Car

A 38-year-old man was killed on Saturday, 23 November, around 8.30pm after being hit by a speeding car on Outer Ring Road near Mukundpur Chowk of northwest Delhi.

The victim, Sanjeev Singh, was a labourer and lived in Jahangirpuri. The accused driver, Ashok Kumar, was drunk at the time of the accident and has been arrested, said DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan.

Kumar tried to flee after the mishap but was chased and nabbed by passersby, who thrashed him and set his car on fire.

4. Two Killed, 15 Hurt in 3 Accidents in Mumbai

Three accidents took place in different parts of the city over a span of 48 hours, killing two persons and injuring 15 others. The police said they were looking into all three cases. The incidents took place in Andheri, Nariman Point and Kandivali.

The last of the three accidents took place around 1 pm on Sunday, 24 November, near Marol depot in Seepz at Andheri East, where a BEST bus rammed into a dumper truck.

The route number 545 bus was crossing the bus depot at Seepz when the dumper, headed in the opposite direction, emerged from one of the bylanes. The bus rammed into the dumper, resulting in minor injuries to passengers.

5. Drugs Chain: Delhi to Goa to Abroad

Recent seizures of high-end party drugs from various parts of the country have led sleuths from the Narcotics Control Bureau to believe that Delhi and Goa have become major transit points in international drug trade.

NCB has carried out raids in various parts of the country and intensified scrutiny at airports as the winter tourism season reaches its peak. The department also destroyed illicit crop of cannabis spread over 72 acres at six different places at Raygada in Odisha and Nadia in West Bengal recently.

6. Woman Held for Forcing Minor Into Prostitution

The Crime Branch in Delhi has arrested a woman for allegedly forcing a 16-year-old girl into prostitution in 2014. The accused, Sonu Punjaban alias Geeta Arora, was arrested earlier too in connection with trafficking cases. She has been booked under MCOCA.

Police said a case under sections of rape, kidnap and POCSO was registered by family members of the teenager in Najafgarh, following which a hunt was launched to nab Punjaban. Cops found that she had five such criminal cases registered against her.

7. Man Kills Mother With Sharp-Edged Weapon After Argument

A man allegedly killed his mother and injured his brother on Sunday morning at Dogachhi Darwanpara under Thanarpara police station area of Nadia district.

Police said Mustapha attacked his mother Ashma Bibi with a sharp-edged weapon following an argument. His elder brother Allauddin, who rushed to the scene to save his mother, also suffered injuries in the attack.

Following the murder, Mustapha fled his home, a senior police officer said.

Ashma Bibi died on the spot while Allauddin was taken to a hospital in Berhampur, he said, adding that the body has been sent for autopsy.

8. Four Men Who Offered Lift to Gurgaon Auto Executive and Murdered Him Arrested

Delhi Police have arrested four people and claimed to have solved the murder case of a 27-year-old auto executive, who was found dead in a forested area of Mahipalpur in Delhi on December 15.

Bhatt was working as an engineer in a Manesar-based auto company, Denso India.

Police said the arrested accused allegedly robbed the man, Sunil Kumar Bhatt, and murdered him after offering him a ride to Haridwar in their car.

9. 20-Year-Old Who Stole Honda City Killed by Cop in Ravi Nagar Shoot-Out

Unknown to them that the car they had stolen was having a GPS tracking device, three hardened criminals were intercepted by a crime branch team of Gurgaon police on Thursday night while they were consuming liquor at a plot of Gali no 4 in Ravi Nagar on Basai road.

When the trio saw a police official knocking the driverside window, one of them fired a shot from inside, which was immediately retaliated by the police officer killing the driver who tried to escape in the Honda City stolen from Gandhi Nagar in Gurgaon on Wednesday, the police said.

The deceased was identified as Akash Kumar (20), a hardened criminal.
