Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has written to the government of India, seeking rejection of Karnataka government's proposal regarding Mekedatu project.

The letter written on Monday said that Tamil Nadu has been constantly urging the union government to reject the project proposal.

“The proposed Mekedatu Project is not in conformity with the final order of the Tribunal and the judgment of the Supreme Court, since the project is not a designated reservoir for the release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu in terms of the final order of the Tribunal as modified by the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” read the letter.

There is a possibility that the Tamil Nadu government may change even without an election now, the DMK president MK Stalin declared at a demonstration on Monday to put pressure on the government to take steps to solve the water crisis in Chennai and other areas.

The huge protest, organised by the Chennai west DMK unit to condemn the AIADMK government's “inept” handling of the water scarcity issue, saw Stalin taking to the streets directly ahead of the Assembly session from 28 June. Central Chennai MP, Dayanidhi Maran, local MLA, J Anbazhagan and hundreds of other party men participated in the protest.

A storm of bigotry, communalism and hatred has been unleashed on social media over this weekend against popular Carnatic music singer Sudha Ragunathan. This, after a wedding invitation for her daughter's marriage to a foreign national became widely circulated on Twitter.

Self-proclaimed 'protectors of the Hindu culture' alleged that the bride, Malavika, was converting to Christianity and demanded that Sudha Ragunathan not be allowed to perform in sabhas and temples any longer.

The skin colour of the groom Michael Murphy, who is of African descent, further prompted racist jibes. Rumours are also being spread that Sudha and her entire family have converted to Christianity.

4. Tanker Supply for Government Hospitals in City Goes up by 40%

With borewells drying up since the start of summer, government hospitals in the city have increased their dependency on tanker supply by nearly 40% to meet their daily requirements. Senior officials of the Health Department said that water requirements of these hospitals are being met 100%.

“There is a 40% increase in tanker supply for the city hospitals. The number of lorries depends on the requirements of each institution. For instance, the Institute of Child Health gets 10 to 12 lorries, while Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital gets 25 to 30 lorries per day. Almost 50% of the water on campus is consumed by patients and their attendants,” said A Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education.

5. Anna University Flayed for ‘Listing’ 92 Barred Colleges, Other Institutions

Though Anna University has released names of the 92 colleges against which it had initiated action after the inspection team found lacunae in infrastructure, the manner in which the names were released has evoked criticism. Parents and academics says instead of making names of these colleges public separately, the university has released the names along with all other private engineering colleges affiliated to it.

“The authorities cunningly announced the names in such a way that innocent students and parents cannot identify them easily,” said KM Karthik, president of Private Educational Institutions Employees Association.
