1. Realtor Held for Kidnap, Murder of Woman

The Madipakkam police are investigating the kidnap and murder of a 60-year-old woman allegedly over property dispute. Her brother Sugumaran, 63, of Pudupet, Alandur, lodged a complaint with the Madipakkam police after she went missing on September 4. Police registered a case.

He said his sister Vijayalakshmi had immovable assets in Bengaluru and civil disputes over them as well. She left home on September 4 to consult a lawyer in Mylapore and did not return. Her mobile remained switched off. After scrutiny of her call records, police found that the number of a realtor Baskar, 33, from Bengaluru, was last on her call list. Police traced him to Bengaluru on Sunday. He was given the power of attorney to sell a few of her properties in Bengaluru. He was brought to Chennai and on interrogation, he spilled the beans.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko’s speech on the occasion of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai’s birth anniversary, advocating a change in the strategy of Dravidian parties and stressing the need to respect the sentiments of those who go to temples to worship, has raised many an eyebrow. “If you do not believe [in God], you need not go to temple. Do not ridicule people of faith who visit temples,” Vaiko had said at the meeting, recalling his efforts to renovate the Sundaraperumal temple in his village, which was constructed by his family.

Vaiko’s argument was that the Dravidian strategy should be revised since crores of devotees were visiting the Madurai Meenakshi temple, Tirupati, Chidambaram and Kancheepuram (to worship Athi Varadar). “But Veeramani (president of Dravidar Kazhagam) may not agree with me,” he said. To buttress his argument, he said the DMK founder too had changed his strategy in accordance with the times, adding that it was necessary to prevent power from reaching the hands of proponents of Sanatana dharma.

The water situation in the tail-end blocks in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumbakkam has worsened, making residents mull over vacating the premises. The blocks including 65 and 66 barely receive four pots of water per household on alternate days. Dirty clothes and vessels have piled up to the extent that residents use slushy water from pipe leaks in other blocks to wash them.

“When my son comes home from school, I get him to take off his uniform. I then dry it under the fan and get him to wear it again the next day. He has exams going on now but he hasn’t been able to bathe in a week,” said Radhika S, a resident of block 65. Radhika’s family purchases cans for Rs 35 each even for rest room purposes.

There is a possibility of light rain in parts of Chennai for the next two days, even as northern districts in the State will continue receiving thundershowers. A cyclonic circulation off the Andhra Pradesh coast, tilting southwestwards, may influence thundershower activity till Thursday. Officials of the Meteorological Department said rainfall would however reduce from Thursday evening or Friday.

During the last 24 hours, ending 8.30 am on Tuesday, several places across the State received widespread rainfall. Thirumanur in Ariyalur district recorded 11 cm — the highest volume of rainfall for the day. Rain gauges in Ennore, Ponneri and Poonamallee received 1 cm during the same period.
