Holding a degree in hand, thousands of graduates are standing in line to apply for 549 vacancies at the Coimbatore corporation. This is the sad state of joblessness in Tamil Nadu. Over 7,000 graduates, have applied for the job of a sanitary worker in the city, ANI reported.

The job posted by Coimbatore Municipal corporation is offering Rs 15,700 as initial salary. Many graduates said they have been getting odd-jobs that pay at most Rs 6,000 per month. Also, for such a government job, the work hours are limited to six hours a day, which gives them scope to juggle another day job.

2. Froth Washes Onto Chennai Coastline, Shocks Public

People walking along the coastline at Foreshore estate were in for a shock when the sea water began to froth. When The Quint spoke to environmentalists, they confirmed that this is a yearly phenomenon but should certainly serve as a wake-up call.

Activists said that following heavy rains since Thursday, 28 November night, a lot of organic substrate and toxic effluents flowed into the ocean, causing the foam. Arul Krishnamurthy of Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) said this is a clear indication that we need to keep a check on untreated sewage and other waste that is being dumped in the ocean.

3. HC Pulls up Chennai Civic Bodies for Allowing Unauthorised Construction Along ECR

The city corporation and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) have both been pulled up and fined by the Madras High Court, for failing to take action against unauthorised constructions along the Muthukadu coastline. The bench pointed out the connivance of the authorities in these constructions and directed them to pay Rs. 25,000 as penalty for dereliction of duty.

The court pointed out that hundreds of buildings had come up in a no-development zone and very close to the Bay of Bengal, and several of them without the requisite authorisation.

4. Man Arrested for Making Bomb Hoax Call to DMK Headquarters

Tension prevailed at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, when the police control room received a call that a bomb was planted on the campus. However, later police found it was a hoax call and arrested a 37-year old man.

On Thursday, after the police control room received a call that a bomb was planted in Anna Arivalayam, the bombs squads and sniffer dogs were immediately pressed into service. Police personnel also made a thorough check and found that the bomb threat letter was indeed a hoax. With the mobile network location, police traced Ganeshan.

5. Centre Grants Rs 2 Crore for George Town, Agaramthen Village

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for redevelopment of George Town in North Chennai as part of a pilot local area plan and implementation of a pilot town planning scheme at Agaramthen village (St Thomas Panchayat Union) under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut).

George Town has been selected for pilot local area plan wherein 150 hectares will be redeveloped while the town planning scheme will be implemented in 151 hectares of Agaramthen. Official sources said the first instalment of Rs 40 lakh was released in September last to commence the project which is to be completed by March.
