Caesar, the last surviving 26/11 hero dog, died on Thursday.

Caesar, a Labrador Retriever, was given a fitting send-off, wrapped in the Indian tricolour and mourned by Mumbai’s police force.

He was 11 years old, and was the last survivor out of the police dogs who were part of the bomb detection operations during the attacks on Mumbai in November 2008.

He had been sent to a farm in Virar after his retirement. It was there that Caesar breathed his last. He had been suffering from arthritis and had been admitted to the Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals (BSPCA) with high fever.

Three of Caesar’s buddies and fellow 26/11 heroes died in quick succession this year. When his last surviving pal Tiger passed away in July, Caesar went into depression and had to be hospitalised.
