Senior Congress leader and former state minister Indira Hridayesh on 9 January visited the residence of Uttarakhand businessman Prakash Pandey – who died after consuming poison at the BJP government’s 'Janata Darbar' in Dehradun last week – ANI reported.

Pandey, a 44-year-old businessman from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani district, consumed poison before Uttarakhand Agriculture Minister Subodh Uniyal – on 6 January. He said he was drowning in debt and blamed the government for losses in his business due to GST and demonetisation.

He said his debt rendered him unable to pay his the school fees of his children, the Indian Express reported.

Pandey had earlier written to the Prime Minister’s Office and to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat about the losses he suffered after a wave of economic slowdown unleashed by demonetisation and GST. The letter stated that his bank balance – pegged to be between Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1 crore a year – had become zilch after demonetisation and GST, the report added.

Pandey said that he wanted to bring his plight to the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP chief Amit Shah.

"We are probing the matter and the SDM has recorded the person's statement. The teams are verifying the sequence of events as stated by him," a police official had Times of India on 7 January.
