The Public Works Department (PWD) on Monday, 3 December, demolished a more than hundred-year-old bridge built on the Kalu River in Thane between Murbad and Shahapur taluka using explosives.
Visuals of the bridge being blown up show the archaic structure being completely demolished. It is reported that the bridge connecting the two areas was in a dilapidated condition.
Earlier this year, movement of heavy vehicles was also restricted on the bridge. The bridge was later declared as “dangerous”.
Following the demolition of the bridge, a tender will be issued by the PWD administration for the construction of a new bridge.
After the explosion, the entire pool of water underneath the bridge was filled with smoke and debris.
