Amit Shah addressed the media at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in New Delhi on Saturday, 3 March, following his party’s spectacular performance in the Assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

Confident of forming the government in Tripura, Shah congratulated his party workers for their work which has translated into a huge number of votes.

“In 2014, Narendra Modiji had said western side of the nation has developed a lot but the same has not reached the eastern side yet. He immediately started his 'Act East Policy.’ I believe this is the victory of his policies, stamped by the three states of the north-east,” the BJP president said to press persons.

After the verdict given by the northeastern states, the BJP is now eyeing Odisha, West Bengal, and Kerala. Shah said, “The golden period will start once the BJP forms the government in these states.”

“We will march towards Karnataka with this massive victory with us,” Shah added.

Meanwhile, counting of votes is currently underway in all the three states. As per the trends so far, the BJP has taken over CPI (M) leader and incumbent Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in Tripura. The party is sealing a clear majority in the state as it leads in 41 seats. This change of guard in Tripura comes after more than two decades.

Sarkar has been in power since 1998.

In Nagaland, the Naga People’s Front under the leadership of TR Zeliang is giving a tough fight to the BJP-NDPP alliance. Chief Minister Zeliang has won from his constituency Peren. The current trends show 29 seats with the NPF and 29 with the BJP-NDPP. The Congress is left way behind in the fight for Nagaland.

In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has won from both his constituencies – Ampati and Songsak. The BJP is trailing in the state with only two seats. Results of 22 constituencies have been declared – and the Congress has won 11 constituencies. The current trend suggests that the Congress will take a comfortable lead in the state with 22 seats.
