1. Karnataka CM’s Wife Anitha Kumaraswamy to Contest Ramanagara Bypoll on JD(S) Ticket
Ending uncertainty over her candidature, the JD(S) Sunday announced fielding Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha Kumaraswamy in the bypoll to the Ramanagara Assembly constituency. The ruling party in the state also said Madhu Bangarappa, son of former chief minister S Bangarappa, would be the candidate from the Shivamogga parliamentary seat.
Earlier, there was speculation that Anitha would contest either from Ramanagara or Mandya. The Janata Dal (Secular) has still not finalised the candidate for the Mandya Lok Sabha bypoll. The party has said the candidature will be announced later.

2. Swine Flu: One More Succumbs to the Deadly Virus, Taking Death Toll to 6 in Karnataka
After five people in Karnataka succumbed to swine flu, the Karnataka Health Department says one more person has lost her life to the virus.
On Friday, 52-year-old Uma Devi Lokesh, who was being treated at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Bengaluru, passed away after suffering from fever, cough and cold. Uma, who hailed from Hassan district’s Doddenahalli in Arsikere Taluk, complained of the symptoms a week ago. Her family members rushed her to Shivakumar Hospital in Arsikere for treatment.
“Two days later, the hospital advised the family members to take the woman to a hospital in Bengaluru. She was taken to Victoria Hospital on October 8 and the doctors there referred her to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. She was being treated there when she died,” said Dr Geeta from the Kolagunda Medical Hospital, the PHC in Uma’s village.

3. Bengaluru School Principal Stabbed in Front of Students
On Sunday, 14 October, Class 10 students of the Havanur Public School in Bengaluru went to attend a class. What they did not expect was to watch their teacher get brutally murdered.
Ranganath, 56, the principal of the school located near Magadi Road, had instructed the students to attend school on Sunday for special class.
At around 11 am, a group of five men barged into the school. Despite several attempts by the security guard to stop them, the gang of men allegedly pushed him aside and went in.

4. Playwright to Meet Police Commissioner Following Right-Wing Threat
Playwright and performer Dayasindhu Sakrepatna, whose play Shiva was cancelled on Saturday after Hindu right-wing extremist organisations, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), staged a protest, is mulling over his next course of action, including seeking legal recourse. “This is the worst thing that can happen to an artiste. I am considering all options, including approaching the courts,” said Mr. Sakrepatna on Sunday.
Arundhati Raja, creative director, Jagriti, said the best way to respond to such diktats by the mob was to stage the play, and Jagriti was committed to it. “We need to seek police protection for the shows. But the police have said they will review the play, which has turned tricky. It is for the playwright to decide whether he is okay with submitting his play for review. We are waiting for him to decide,” she said.

5. Case Against Hospital as IAS Officer Doubts Vaccine
Pallavi Akurathi, a joint secretary in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, has filed a complaint of criminal negligence naming Dr S Suresh and senior staff nurse A N M Krishnamma. The Indiranagar police have registered an FIR.
Suresh examined the officer baby on October 3 and prescribed four vaccines, the fourth being OPV. The officer bought only three vaccines from the CMH medical store as the OPV was not available.
The nurse administered the three vaccines before giving two or three pink drops to the baby which “we assumed are the OPV as mentioned in the prescription”. Later in the day, the officer learnt that OPV manufactured by a particular company was banned.
