1. OPD Services May be Hit at Pvt Hospitals Today

Outpatient care at private hospitals across the state is likely to be disrupted on Friday following a strike call by Indian Medical Association’s Karnataka chapter to express solidarity with protesting junior doctors. The junior doctors are up in arms over Kannada activists’ alleged harassment of their colleague at the government-run Minto hospital.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, whose activists were allegedly involved in harassing the Minto junior doctor, said that its members will surrender before police on Friday morning in the larger interest of patients.

Outpatient departments (OPDs) have been asked to close from 6am Friday to 6am Saturday. Emergency cases will not be affected. “Some 25,000 hospitals will shut down their OPDs,” said Madhusudhana Kariganur, president of IMA’s Karnataka chapter.

Denying what recent news reports had called a reaction to the “crackdown” by Bengaluru Police on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the city, apartment complexes in the tech hub of Marathahalli said that they had placed no restrictions on the entry of Bengali-speaking workers for fear of unknowingly employing illegal immigrants.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru Police had on 26 October, arrested 30 Bangladeshi nationals who they claimed were living in the city without visas. They have been booked under the The Foreigners Act, 1946 and their deportation from the city is imminent.

Following this news, several reports had emerged of residents in apartment complexes in West Bengaluru ‘banning’ Bengali-speaking people for fear of not being able to tell them apart from Bangladeshi migrants. However, when The Quint visited apartment complexes in the area, both domestic workers and residents denied any discrimination or job losses as a fallout.

Karnataka Textbook Society on Thursday asked those who drew up school lessons on 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan during the Siddaramaiah-led Congress regime to present their view on having them removed. The society has asked them to submit a report within a fortnight.

The committee met on Thursday to discuss a letter from Madikeri BJP MLA Appachu Ranjan demanding the removal of Tipu lesson from school textbooks. Ranjan also attended the meeting and presented his case. Society director HN Balakrishna chaired the meeting.

Sources say the committee told the MLA that it is a sensitive issue and needs to be dealt carefully. It said it needed time to study records before making a decision on whether to remove the lessons.
