1. JD(S), Congress Announce Candidates for Karnataka Byelections

The JD(S) and Congress in Karnataka confirmed its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha and State Assembly by-elections scheduled for November 3.

The Congress confirmed that VS Ugrappa will contest from the Ballari Lok Sabha constituency and Anand Nyamagouda, son of the deceased Jamkhandi MLA Siddu Nyamagouda Patil, will contest from the Jamkhandi Assembly constituency.

The JD(S) meanwhile confirmed Anita Kumaraswamy, wife of HD Kumaraswamy as its candidate in the Ramanagara Assembly by-election while Madhu Bangarappa and R Shivaramegowda will contest in the Shivamogga and Mandya parliamentary election respectively.

2. Three Students Drown While Taking Selfie

Three students, who were busy taking a selfie, drowned at Nijagallu Lake in Dobbspet at Nelmangala on the outskirts of the city on Monday morning.

The three, students of Siddaganga Boys PU College in Tumakuru, had come for an NSS camp and it was the last day of the camp on Monday.

The deceased, Poornachandra (18), Mohammed Murthuza (17) and Shashank KS (17), had come with 51 other students and seven teachers for the camp.

The boys were taking part in a campaign to clean the lake and its surroundings when they drowned.

3. Activists Condemn Raids on Media Outlets

Experts from various fields and non-government organisations led by the Environment Support Group (ESG) came together to express solidarity with media houses and civil society who were "being harassed by various government agencies" for expressing dissent.

ESG coordinator Leo F Saldanha said there has been an attack on civil societies by various government departments, especially finance ministry offices, which was not acceptable.

Objecting to the raids conducted by Central government agencies on three organisations — The Quint, The News Minute and Greenpeace India — he said the 'Solidarity Forum for Dissent' believes in and celebrates dissent.

4. MeToo: Actor Sangeetha Recounts Multiple Incidents of Sexual Assault in Sandalwood

As part of the ongoing #MeToo campaign movement on Indian social media, Kannada actor Sangeetha Bhat came out with her own story. In a Facebook post, the actor alleged that she had faced sexual assault and misconduct on multiple occasions, and it ultimately compelled her to quit the Sandalwood for good. She added that these incidents “have haunted” her every night and are the reason behind her depression.

Without taking names, the Dayavittu Gamanisi actor accused a casting director, a serial director whose daughter, she said, is also an actor; three film directors and two assistants, including one director who who “was in news for allegations of casting couch”; one producer, a Tamil TV comedian, and two Kannada actors from one family, of sexual misconduct and assault.

5. Police Issue Guidelines for Cracker Shops

The city police have issued guidelines for businessmen to avail permits for temporary cracker shops on BBMP playgrounds across the city. This year, a GST registration number is mandatory for businessmen who want to put up cracker shops.

Commercial Taxes Department will issue a temporary GST registration number for the same, the statement said. Further, a family can only put up one stall in a particular ground.
