1. Fuel Tax Hike to Stay Despite Congress’ Displeasure

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday, 12 July, announced an additional crop loan waiver worth Rs 10,700 crore without rolling back the tax hike on petrol and diesel despite pressure from his alliance partner, the Congress.

The announcement came even as the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party walked out of the Legislative Assembly after Kumaraswamy failed to convince them on how the government planned to implement the loan waiver.

Kumaraswamy ruled out withdrawing the sales tax hike on petrol and diesel. “The Union Finance Minister himself has stated that levy of duty is a significant source of funds. The Centre has hiked excise duty on fuel from Rs 9 to Rs 19 in the last four years. It was inevitable for me to do this,” he said.

The quantum of the Janata Dal (Secular)–Congress coalition government’s much-discussed farm loan waiver is now about Rs 40,000 crore – a jump from Rs 34,000 crore announced in the State Budget.

On Thursday, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced that all crop loans in cooperative institutions to the tune of Rs 1 lakh availed till 10 July 2018 would be waived under the scheme.

While the budget announcement had set the eligibility of crop loans taken between 1 April 2009 and 31 December 2017, the chief minister extended the date of eligibility till 10 July, which is expected to benefit about 45 lakh families. The announcement, according to Kumaraswamy, would have a net benefit for farmers of about Rs 8,500 crore in the cooperative sector alone.

Two passenger airplanes had a close shave over Bengaluru’s airspace on 10 July, triggering anti-collision alarms and an inquiry by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Indigo operates both the aircraft. In a press statement on Thursday, Indigo said their Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) resolution advisory system was triggered when a plane operating on the Coimbatore-Hyderabad route came close to another on the Bengaluru-Kochi sector.

According to sources, the airplanes came within 4 nautical miles (around 7.4 km) of each other, with a vertical separation of just 200 feet. Considering the low vertical separation between the aircraft, and that on average an aircraft cruises at over 900 kilometres per hour, it could have been a matter of a few seconds for the two planes to come face-to-face.

More than 300 passengers were seated in the two Airbus 320 aircraft.

A 20-year-old, Roshan, has been arrested for killing his father’s friend and disposing his body near Mysuru with the help of his mother Jubina. The deceased has been identified as Basheer, a real estate agent by profession.

Roshan’s father Illiyas was a close friend of 38-year-old Basheer, who hailed from Bijapur. The victim lived with Illiyas and his family near Acharya College in Soladevanahalli.

On 27 June, Illiyas, dealer of second-hand vehicles, had gone to Tumakuru. “On 29 June, Basheer saw Roshan wasting time on his mobile phone and advised him to be serious about his life. Basheer also tried to beat him up. Roshan took a cricket bat and bashed Basheer’s head in. Basheer is also alleged to have pledged Jubina’s gold ornaments to run his real estate business. He, however, had not returned the ornaments and had frequent arguments with Jubina over this. This could be one of the reasons for the murder,” said an investigating officer.
