Congress Wins Big in Urban Local Body Polls; BJP Loses SheenThe Congress party has come out ahead in the elections to 63 urban local bodies comprising 1,361 seats, that went to polls in Karnataka on 29 May, winning 509 seats. The BJP came in second winning 366 seats while the JD(S), Congress’ alliance partner bagged only 174 seats. Seats were contested in eight city municipal councils (CMC), 33 town municipal councils (TMC) and 22 town panchayats (TP).Going by the assumption that Congress and JD(S) will continue their alliance in the state, the coalition bagged 5 of the eight CMCs that went to polls on 29 May, while 2 CMCs will be decided on which party the Independent candidates go with.When it comes to TMCs, the coalition won 20 of them with the BJP bagging 5 of the total 33. Breakthrough in Kalburgi Murder Case; Shooter, Aide in SIT CustodyIn a breakthrough in investigation of the murder of Kannada Litterateur MM Kalburgi, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday, 31 May, said they have the custody of Ganesh Miskin, the suspected shooter and Krishnamurthy who drove the shooter to and from Kalburgi's residence on 30 August, 2015, sources in the SIT told The Quint.The SIT has reported the breakthrough after more than four years since the murder. The case was earlier investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Karnataka police. He is accused of demanding the bribe to issue the work order to Chandrashekar, of Xeon Systems, who had won a Rs 3 -crore contract to provide staff on a contract basis to the department.Vasudev allegedly pestered Chandrashekar for money to issue the work order.
