1. Bengaluru Fails to Make it to Top 50 in Ease of Living Index

Not just the top 10, the IT capital of India does not even figure in top 50 in the first ‘Ease of Living Index–2018’ report, released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban of the Union government on Monday.

Bengaluru has been assigned an overall rank of 58 among 111 cities assessed across the country. Pune, Navi Mumbai, Greater Mumbai, Tirupati, and Chandigarh are in the top five slots. In the top 50 overall ranking, only one city in the State – Mangaluru – has found place; it is ranked 41st.

The ease of living framework comprises four “pillars” – Institutional, Social, Economic, and Physical – which are further broken down into 15 categories and 78 indicators.

The central government’s alleged decision to shift the 22nd edition of Aero India has kicked off a political battle in Karnataka. Calling the move a political vendetta and an attempt to end Bengaluru’s dominance in the aerospace sector, the Congress and the JD(S) have launched a political campaign, with only months left for the general elections.

The main target for both parties is Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

For the Opposition parties, which have been protesting the government’s decision to sideline Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) to accommodate a private firm in the multi-role fighter jet deal with Rafale, the controversy over Aero India has provided further ammunition.

The alleged decision has also brought back the controversy over the step-motherly treatment to southern states.

Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over farmer loan waiver and the alleged irregularities regarding the Rafale deal at a rally in Karnataka. The All India Congress Committee President arrived on Monday at Bidar to address a rally for the farming community ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Incidentally, this was Rahul’s first visit to the state after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in May. And it seemed like his speech on Monday was mostly reserved to attack the PM.

He said that the Congress had kept its promise regarding farm loan waiver.

Rahul said, “We had promised you one thing. We had told you that when the Congress comes to power in Karnataka, the first thing we will do is to waive off farmer loans. Do you remember? “The Karnataka government has waived off Rs 31,000 cr worth farm loan. We fulfilled whatever we promised.”

The accused Abdul Anan also stabbed his mother-in-law and her younger daughter before he was nabbed by the police. The deceased has been identified as Sajana Begum, and the couple from Tripura were residing at a rented house in Nyanappanahalli in Hulimavu. Abdul was working in KR Puram.

The police said that the incident took place at 8.30 am after Abdul quarrelled with Sajana for having an illicit affair with a man from Kolkata. In a fit of rage, he attacked her with a kitchen knife and stabbed more than five times all over her body. Later, he went to his in-laws house and tried to stab his mother in-law Amina Kasum and her younger sister Sapna Begum, who escaped with minor injuries. Sajana’s brother, who intervened, snatched the knife from Abdul and alerted the police who took him to their custody.
