1. Rs 1,500 Crore Released for Flood Relief

Under pressure to do more in flood-hit areas since the Centre is yet to release funds, the Cabinet on Wednesday decided to release Rs 1,000 crore to start construction of new houses and help those whose houses need repair.

"We have promised Rs 5 lakh to build new houses. For this purpose, we have decided to release Rs 1,000 crore to the deputy commissioners," Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said, briefing reporters.  "We have estimated that about 30,000 -40,000 houses have to be built. Also, where there’s partial damage, we will give Rs 25,000 to help people take up immediate repairs,” he added.

Separately, the Cabinet decided to release Rs 500 crore through the Public Works Department (PWD) to start repairing roads in the flood-hit areas, Madhuswamy said.

2. Fire at Multi-storey Commercial Building on MG Road

Latest news and updates from Karnataka

A fire in an electric console box at the entrance of a bank on the ground floor of a building on Mahatma Gandhi Road caused panic among the occupants, including students of a coaching class. Fortunately, everyone was evacuated safely, said fire and emergency services officials who received an alert around 2.55 p.m. on Wednesday.

Five tenders battled for around 45 minutes to put out the fire. It was a small blaze, but thick smoke was emanating from the ground floor, leading people to think that it was a major fire, said Chief Fire Officer Ramakrishna who was at the spot with a nine-member team. “The smoke was emanating from the switch boxes, as wires were burning. This created panic among the occupants on the building,” he added.

Motorists are unlikely to get a huge relief from the high penalties under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act.

Sources in the secretariat said that there is a possibility that fines will reduced for only a few violations that come under the purview of State government, such as driving vehicles without registration, DL, or insurance and rash driving.

A source in the government secretariat said, "The State government can only revise the penalty amounts that come within its purview. The legal department is yet to give an opinion on whether the State has the power to revise penalties along the lines of the Gujarat government. The Centre is also studying the legality of the notification issued by the Gujarat government."

A 44-year-old businessman was assaulted by an acquaintance and his associates outside a gymnasium on Richmond Town, where he regularly works out.
The man got sick after consuming protein powder he had bought from the acquaintance and had complained to him about it.

The businessman, Amjad Abdullah (name changed), bought three containers of protein powder from Kasif — whom he got acquainted with at the gymnasium — paying Rs 18,000. Abdullah, who has been regularly working out at the gymnasium for nearly a year, began vomiting and had an upset stomach for three days straight after he started consuming the powder. He called up Kasif to report his sickness and wanted him to take back the two remaining unopened containers and return the money he paid.
