1. Govt Sees Need to Reorient Farmers on Agri Schedules

Southern Karnataka, including the Cauvery river basin, has been the driest part in the state during this monsoon, prompting the government to scramble for contingency plans such as focused cloud seeding over the arid regions.

While the southwest monsoon has been delayed by a fortnight, parts of northern Karnataka, including Dharwad, Gadag Koppal and Bagalkot, received about 10cm rainfall as against the normal 9cm. But the districts in the Cauvery basin suffered severe deficiency. Normally, cumulative rainfall in the southern districts, including Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu and Hassan, is about 16cm between June 1 and 25, but the region has received only about 8cm. While the sowing plan has gone awry because of the truant rain, experts attribute the vagary to the changing pattern.
