1. Chandrababu Naidu To Be Point Person for the ‘Mahagathbandhan’; Meets Gowda

A day after the resounding victory of the Congress-JD(S) alliance in the Karnataka by-elections, former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was to take the responsibility of uniting the secular Opposition parties.

The announcement came following a meeting between Naidu, Gowda and Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, at Gowda’s residence in Bengaluru on Thursday evening.

Naidu said he has taken the initiative to meet all stakeholders and to prepare a plan for the alliance in consultation with them.

“What happened in the Karnataka by-elections shows the mood of the nation. This (meeting) is an initial step. During the course of time, we will work out a plan… I have met Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav. Tomorrow (Friday), I will meet Stalin (president of DMK party),” Naidu said.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) is on the hunt not just for mining baron and former Minister G Janardhana Reddy, but also for the 57 kg gold bullion he allegedly received as payment from the proprietor of an investment firm. So far, however, the police have turned up empty handed on both counts.

A CCB team searched Reddy’s Ballari residence for over eight hours on Thursday. “Though the house is not being used by Reddy and his family, it continues to be a key operation base of his associates,” said a source, adding that the police initially suspected that the gold may have been hidden there.

The teams also searched the offices of Obulapuram Mining Company owned by Reddy and his brothers. However, both the former minister and the gold have eluded them so far.

At least 54 people have sustained eye injuries due to firecrackers this Diwali on Wednesday and Thursday.

Most of the injured were bystanders, who were not involved in bursting them. Sometimes, the bursting of crackers was in violation of the Supreme Court order that restricted the timings, said doctors.

The state-run Minto Eye Hospital received 26 patients. One of them was a 53-year-old man, who sustained a grievous eye injury, while riding his two-wheeler. BL Sujatha Rathod, director of the hospital, said that four patients were being treated for grievous eye injuries.

A suspected case of caste killing has come to light in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district after a 22-year-old pregnant woman was found murdered in her home in Yalgur village on Tuesday evening. The deceased woman, Renuka Shakarappa Nayak, was allegedly stabbed to death. She was found dead by her neighbours on Tuesday, who informed the police.

Investigators in charge of the case suspect that Renuka’s mother, Marevva, allegedly killed her daughter as she had married a man who did not belong to the same caste.

“Renuka and I lived in Shiravar town in Raichur district. We met in junior college and fell in love two years ago. Her parents did not agree to the match because she belongs to the Halumata community and I am a Lambani. Two years ago, we eloped and got married. We settled down in Vijayapura’s Yalgur village after that,” Renuka’s husband, Shankarappa Nayak said.
