1. K’taka Building Collapse: Death Toll Touches 7, Rescue Op Underway

At least seven people have been killed in an under-construction building that collapsed in North Karnataka’s Dharwad district on Tuesday, 19 March, DG Fire, MN Reddi confirmed.

“All bodies recovered so far have been of adult men. We have rescued 55 people in total,” Police Commissioner, Hubli-Dharwad, MN Nagaraju said.

“The greatest challenge has been cutting the concrete and getting to the trapped persons, we do not want them to be crushed by our hasty actions. Around 4-5 people are alive and communicating with us. We have provided them water and pushed in oxygen through cylinders and masks.”

2. Sumalatha Files Nomination From Mandya As Independent Candidate Amid Congress Flags

Two days after announcing her decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, Sumalatha, wife of deceased actor-politician Ambareesh, was in Mandya on Wednesday, 20 March, to file her nomination at the District Collector’s office.

However, before Sumalatha could even reach the DC office to file her nomination, a procession of her supporters thronged the office raising slogans in support of Sumalatha, holding pictures of Ambareesh and waving Congress flags.

Sumalatha was accompanied by Kannada film actors Yash and Darshan, who were also present at her candidate announcement earlier this week in Bengaluru.

3. BJP May Back Sumalatha: Yeddyurappa

BJP State President and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Wednesday, 20 March, hinted that his party may eventually end up extending support to Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh, who entered the fray from the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency.
During an interaction with DH and Prajavani, Yeddyurappa said Sumalatha’s growing popularity cannot be ignored. “The BJP will contest all 28 seats. However, public sentiment is that support should be extended to Sumalatha,” he said.

Yeddyurapa, however, seemed to contradict his own party man K S Eshwarappa, who earlier told reporters that the BJP would not support Sumalatha.

4. Several Hotels Locked, Penalised Over Waste and use of Plastic

Officials of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on Wednesday, 20 March seized several hundred kilograms of plastic materials and slapped fines for unhygienic conditions during simultaneous raids on hotels and commercial establishments across the city.

The officials locked up several hotels for gross violations in terms of non-segregation of waste and use of plastic materials.

A team of officials on raided A2B hotels and slapped a fine of ₹1 lakh for use of banned plastic materials and non-segregation of waste .

In South zone, a team locked up two hotels and seizing 175 kg of plastic materials. A total penalty of ₹4.5 lakh was levied on the hotels for violating the segregation policy and use of plastic materials.

5. TV Journo in Police Custody for Extorting Padma Awardee

Television journalist Hemanth Kashyap on Wednesday, 20 March, remanded in four-day police custody in connection with an extortion case.

Kashyap, input chief at Public TV, was arrested on Tuesday, 19 March by the Sadashivanagar police after Padma Shri awardee Dr  Ramana Rao B accused him and other television reporters of blackmailing him with a fake sleaze video. Kashyap demanded Rs 50 lakh for not broadcasting the video. Worried about his reputation, Rao paid him Rs 5 lakh on three different occasions.

According to Rao, Kashyap had called him up on WhatsApp on 5 March, saying he wants to speak to him. The same day around 4 pm, he came to Rao's Sadashivanagar clinic and introduced him as a television reporter. Kashyap told him about the video which, he claimed, was with five other television reporters.
