1. Karnataka HC Turns Down Demand for Stay on Tipu Sultan Jayanthi

Karnataka High Court, on Tuesday, rejected the plea for an interim stay on Tipu Sultan Jayanthi celebrations in the state. The High Court turned down the plea, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Manju Chinappa, a resident of Kodagu district.

In the plea, apart from an interim stay to restrain the state government from celebrating Tipu Sultan Jayanthi throughout the state, Chinappa had questioned the legality of such a celebration as well.

While the High Court declined the interim stay, the hearing on the legality of celebrating Tipu’s legacy will continue. The High Court has given the Karnataka government four weeks’ notice to file objections to the petitioner’s contention against the celebration of Tipu Jayanthi.

A day after chief minister Siddaramaiah's deadline to fill up potholes in the city , the city civic corporation suspended three engineers on Tuesday for alleged negligence of duty.

Mayor Sampath Raj said more heads were likely to roll in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). “Now, we are not counting the potholes but counting the engineers who are not doing their job. As per the estimate on Tuesday , there could be 600 more potholes waiting to be filled in different parts of the city,” he said. “We are carrying out night inspection to identify the problem areas. Even on major roads, there could be 4 percent of potholes left unattended. Due to continuous traffic on these stretches, we are not able to fill them.“

A 33-year-old woman from Mumbai is battling for life after a 36-year-old man from the city reportedly stabbed her for saying no to his marriage proposal.

Kavita Agarwal, of Chembur, Mumbai, decided to remarry as her husband, Lalit Agarwal, had died two years ago. She has two daughters – aged 7 and 14 – who live with her in Mumbai. Kavita uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website and got in touch with Lohith, a resident of Parvathipuram near Chamarajpet. He evinced interest in marrying her. After talking to him on phone for some time, Kavita decided to meet him in person. Accordingly, she arrived in Bengaluru on 19 October.

During her visit, Kavita did a bit of investigation and learnt that Lohith lives with his mother and that he is jobless. His neighbours apparently spoke of him in unflattering words, saying his wife had deserted him. Kavita decided not to marry him and booked a return ticket to Mumbai.

High drama prevailed near KC General Hospital, Malleswaram, on Tuesday morning when a 35-year-old autorickshaw driver threatened to commit suicide by lying down in front of a BMTC bus. He took the step after traffic police demanded that he cough up the fine for the 35 pending violations he had been booked for, failing which his vehicle would be seized.

Driver Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Mariyappana Palya, was stopped near the hospital around 10 am after police found him driving without uniform and jumping the signal. "First, Mahesh said he was in a hurry and had left his uniform at home. Then he said he could not see the signal light as there was a bus in front of his vehicle. CCTV camera footage later showed there was no bus in front of his auto, and Mahesh knowingly jumped the signal," Malleswaram traffic police said.

With elections around the corner, the government is already at work, strategically showering sops and winning hearts. This time, it’s the defence community in Karnataka that’s receiving massive hikes in benefits, over and above what it gets from the Centre.

Benefits for war heroes as well as gallantry award winners have been hiked significantly, in answer to a long-pending demand from the ex-servicemen community. The former defence personnel had been demanding benefits on a par with what is given to their counterparts in states such as Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Agriculture land or cash in lieu of land to the dependents of martyrs or war veterans who suffered disabilities was earlier between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh. This has been revised to Rs 1 lakh up to Rs 10 lakh.
