As Gujarat prepares for the big Assembly election results, politicians in Karnataka are keeping a close watch on the campaign and the results. In Gujarat, Congress is campaigning keeping national issues of GST, demonetisation and subsequent economic slowdown at the forefront, while BJP has been focusing on Modi’s development agenda. What wins in Gujarat is expected to heavily influence the campaigning in Karnataka.

Opinion polls may have predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP in the Gujarat assembly elections, but the betting market, popularly known as 'satta bazaar', is witnessing a far more intriguing battle.

The fortunes of the Congress have risen steadily — at least in betting circles in Karnataka — since the announcement of the elections. A Bengaluru bettor said that although the BJP was initially expected to easily win 110-120 seats, things have changed closer to polls. "It was such a sure thing that if you had bet Re 1 on the BJP winning 110 seats, you'll get a return of a mere 25 paise," said a bookie based in north Karnataka.

Two men were arrested for allegedly assaulting two policemen during a fracas on Kodighelli Main Road on Saturday night. Kodigehalli police said Roshan Raj, 33, of Malleswaram, and Girish, 31, of Dasarahalli near Amruthahalli, were drunk when the incident occurred. While Roshan is an employee of a private firm on Old Airport Road, Girish is a contract labourer with Isro.

A police officer said the duo came out of a bar in Amruthahalli and headed towards Kodigehalli Main Road. Around midnight, head constable Shanthalingaiah and constable Shivaraj, who were on night patrol, came across them creating a nuisance.

"A verbal altercation took place and Roshan bit the head constable's finger while trying to escape," a police officer said. "He tore Shanthalingaiah's uniform. The cops alerted the police station, which sent reinforcements and the duo was hauled to the police station."
