1. Congress MLA Haris' Son on the Run After Assaulting Youth

Congress MLA from Shantinagar NA Haris’ elder son and his associates allegedly brutally assaulted a 24-year-old son of an industrialist in an upscale restaurant in central Bengaluru, late Saturday night, landed at the hospital where he was admitted, and threatened him with dire consequences.

Mohammed Nalapad Haris, 24, a Bengaluru City Youth Congress general secretary, is on the run after Cubbon Park police booked him and an unspecified number of his associates for assaulting Vidvat L at Farzi Café, located on the second level of UB City. Vidvat is a management graduate and resident of RMV II Stage, near Dollars Colony, north Bengaluru.

The incident has threatened to snowball into a major controversy in the run-up to the assembly elections, with the BJP and AAP staging protests against the incident.

2. Devotees Flock to Millennium's Second Mahamastakabhisheka

The millennium's second Mahamastakabishekha of Lord Bahubali at Vindhyagiri Hills near Shravanabelagola started at 2.32pm on Saturday, bathing one of the world's tallest stone monoliths in a slew of colours.

The anointing of the statue's head was performed by over 100 priests in the presence of 361 tyagis, munis and matajis and led by Shravanabelagola mutt seer Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swami.

The event is held once every 12 years. Chief minister Siddaramaiah and Hassan district minister A Manju performed the abishekha too. Entry to the hilltop is restricted to pass holders while the public caught a glimpse of the event from the foothills.

3. More Feared to Be Trapped in the Rubble: Building Collapse

Search operation for at least four more people feared to be trapped under the rubble of the 5-storey building that collapsed in Kasavanahalli will continue for two more days.

Sources from the spot said that there are bodies of a mother, child, a painter and another man buried somewhere in the rubble. However, police and rescue officials said that no one approached them about missing people.

The officials are gathering information from the nearby residents if the claimed mother and child had no known people around. The search for them is underway. "Search operation and clearing of debris will continue even after Sunday. Around 70 percent of the rubble has been cleared by Saturday evening and we will check into the basement area if anyone is still trapped there," said Basavanna, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) told Deccan Herald.

4. BBMP Staff to Strike Work From Today

Services in all the eight zones of the BBMP are likely to be disrupted from Monday onwards as the civic body's employees are going on an indefinite strike demanding the fulfilment of their demands.

The 18,000-strong workforce of the BBMP is expected to take part in the protest scheduled to be held at the Freedom Park, said Amrut Raj, chairman, BBMP Employees' Welfare Association. "Our main grievance is the arrest of our colleagues in two incidents wherein the authorities did not carry proper investigation," he added.

BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said he had instructed the head of the civic body's legal cell to take the necessary steps to ensure the employees' interests were protected. He urged the employees to report for work.

5. State Gears up to Curb Dengue

With the state reporting 17,339 cases of dengue fever in 2017, making it third on the countrywide list, the health and family welfare department, Karnataka, has charted a calendar to curb the number of cases this year.

The department had clarified that interventions to contain dengue fever cases has helped bring down number of deaths due to this viral fever. The state may be number three in the number of cases, but it stands 10th in the number of deaths due to case fatality rates down to 0.02, the lowest among other states.

A state-level sectoral meeting was held recently under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary Government of Karnataka, seeking cooperation of all stakeholders in implementing the preventive and control measures in the state and same will also be extended to district levels.

6. JD(S)-BSP Firm up Alliance, Plan Third Front Formation

Sending feelers for the possible formation of a third front ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the BJP in her first public rally after the decimation of her party in last year’s Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

“The ghatbandhan (alliance) with the JD(S) is aimed at fighting the unjust social and political order of the Congress and BJP,” Mayawati said at the mammoth rally in Bengaluru organised to formally launch the JD(S)-BSP combined poll campaign in Karnataka.

The rally billed as the “mother of all rallies” lived up the expectations and it was the biggest political rallies held in the recent times in Karnataka.
