An M.Tech student of the Indian Institute of Technology- Madras allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room on Monday. Rahul G Prasad, a native of Kollam, Kerala, was in his fourth year at the institute.

Although, the time of the death is not yet clear, the hostel authorities alerted the police around 4 AM on Monday morning after he was found hanging from his room in the third floor of Ganga Hostel.

A suicide case has been registered and police investigations are underway.

There has been no confirmation of a suicide note.

Speaking to The News Minute, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras confirmed that the student belonged to the Electrical Engineering department.

This is the second such incident in the two months at IIT Madras. In September, an M.Tech student from Andhra Pradesh committed suicide reportedly due to academic pressure.

The 23-year old B.Tech scholar had just returned from his hometown before he took the drastic step.

These two are not solitary cases of suicides in IIT Madras. There have been other cases of students committing suicide in the country’s premier educational institutions including other IITs owing to the immense pressure they undergo while doing the course.
