A man named Jaswant Singh was arrested from the capital’s Paharganj area on 24 May, after a 22-year-old American woman of Indian origin accused him of rape. In her statement, the woman, who was visiting Delhi, said that she was made to consume alcohol before being raped on 16 May, Hindustan Times reported.

“Despite being dissuaded to pursue a police case, she instantly searched Singh on Facebook, sent him a friend request and then saved his picture for record. She then passed on that photo to the police, which led to his arrest. If she did not have a photo, the police would not have been able to put a face to this person,” the woman’s lawyer told the daily.

According to the report, the woman was allegedly made to consume alcohol by three men that she befriended during her visit. In the statement, she said that after she got drunk, the three left her alone in her hotel room and a fourth person, unknown to her, entered and allegedly raped her.

Following the sexual assault, the three other friends returned to the room. The woman’s lawyer, Surender Singh Hooda, told HT :

After the incident, the three men whom she addressed as friends told her that it was Jaswant Singh raped her and that he was not a nice man. They told her they were sorry for what happened and that it was not worth going to the police.

The woman filed a complaint on 19 May. “A case of rape was registered immediately after we received a complaint from the woman. Jaswant Singh has been arrested and the woman has also recorded her statement before the magistrate,” the daily quoted Mandeep Singh Randhawa, DCP central, as saying.

According to the report, when the woman went to file a police complaint, the investigating officer insisted that the complaint be filed in Hindi, despite the rape survivor’s plea that she wasn’t fluent in Hindi.

The three other men have not been made co-accused in the case yet. However, the woman’s lawyer insists that they must be booked.

They clearly helped Jaswant. Also, they then told the victim to not file a complaint. Why did the police not book them?

According to the report, the police claim they are yet to investigate the exact role of the three men in the crime.
