AIADMK MLA Kanagaraj passed away after suffering a massive cardiac arrest on Thursday, 21 March. He represented the Sulur constituency in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Kanagaraj was known for having appealed to Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and TTV Dhinakaran to unite for the sake of the party and its cadre.

“No party can defeat the AIADMK if it stays united. The DMK was defeated in the elections and it should continue. All three leaders should come together and save the AIADMK. They should shed their ego and unite for the sake of the party founded by MGR and nurtured by late Amma,” Kanagaraj had said right after TTV Dhinakaran won the by-elections at the R K Nagar constituency with a thumping majority.

Kanagaraj is survived by his wife Rathinam, son Shanmugasundaram and daughter Bamavijaya.

With Kanagaraj's demise the total vacancy in the TN Assembly rises to 22.

Kanagaraj is the fifth MLA to die since May 2016. The previous vacancies were AIADMK MLAs, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa of RK Nagar constituency, Seenivel and AK Bose from Tirupparankundram and DMK supremo Karunanidhi representing Tiruvarur constituency who passed away in August 2018.

Besides this, 18 AIADMK MLAs were disqualified after they jumped ship to TTV Dhinakaran’s camp. Former Minister Balakrishna Reddy was also disqualified because he was convicted in a criminal case.

By-elections are being held in 18 of these constituencies on 18 April.
