Shibaji Roy, director of ML Roy & Co Sanitations Pvt Ltd (one the oldest sanitation and drainage solutions company in Bengal), was part of a seven-car motorcade that had started from Kolkata on Sunday morning for a long drive along NH-6 and were returning home, The Times of India reported.

"Prima facie it seems that Shibaji Roy, a man in his early 30s, was driving the car. His friend Ashna Surana (21) was seated next to him," an officer told PTI.

While Roy was declared dead on arrival at a private hospital in Kolkata, Surana was admitted with serious injuries, the officer added. Roy's friends told the daily that he was alive for about an hour and kept on crying out for help, TOI reported. He is survived by his son, wife, mother and a younger brother.

Both of them were pulled out of the mangled vehicle by locals with the help of police officers.

While Roy’s son had a miraculous escape, his friend’s daughter and another owner-driver from the motorcade were seriously injured, the TOI report added.

We are probing all angles, including if the rider was over-speeding, or had to veer right because of a truck in front.
