Wife Kills Two Daughters, Immolates Herself After Farmer’s Suicide
With the pre-monsoon rain out of sight, and unpaid debts, Shivanappa hanged himself on his farm on Saturday night.
A day after a debt-ridden farmer committed suicide, his wife killed their two daughters and then immolated herself in Honnahalli, in Karnataka, on Sunday.
Shivanappa, a 45-year-old farmer had taken loans to dig a borewell on his three-acre land and had slipped into depression as he couldn’t repay his loans, The New Indian Express reported.
With the pre-monsoon rains out of sight, and a borewell that did not yield any water, Shivanappa hanged himself on his farm on Saturday night.
To escape harassment from the money-lenders, his 36-year-old wife, Kanya, choked her two children, Preeti and Priya, aged 8 and 7 respectively, set them on fire and finally, immolated herself.
The Karnataka government has decided to cover all tanks over the next four years to meet the needs of drinking and agricultural water in the district.
District-in-charge HS Mahadeva Prasad directed the Assistant Commissioner Kavitha Rajarathnam to submit a report.
