Local administration of Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh has planned to make full use of social media, especially the leading chat medium Whatsapp, according to a report in The Times of India.

They are urging locals to send them pictures of people defecating in public and get rewarded with Rs 100. This step is a part of making the district ‘open defecation-free’ by Independence Day this year.

The panchayats of the district have been ordered to penalise the defaulters and Rs 100 be given to the sender for the tip-off. Minister for rural development, Gopal Bhargava, earlier had said that people who are found openly defecating will lose their ration cards.

We have left it to village panchayats to decide on the amount of fine, which should be collected from anyone found defecating in open. But, they have been instructed to give at least Rs 100 of the fine to the person who tips off panchayat officials through WhatsApp.
