At least 23 shootings by toddlers were reported in the US since January 2016. The Washington Post reported the hike from last year’s figures of 18 incidents in the same period.

In a vast majority of these cases, the children found the guns and shot themselves, often ending in fatal consequences.

Georgia has been pegged with the highest number of such disasters with eight such incidents reported since the beginning of the year. Surprisingly, Illinois, home to extremely high rates of gun violence has not reported any such occurrences since 2015.

Barack Obama To Take Action to Control Growing Rates of Gun Violence

The Pro-Gun-Control Group ‘Every town for Gun Safety’ has found that in the past year there have been 77 incidents of a minor shooting accidentally shooting someone.

In February this year, a Milwaukee toddler fatally shot his nine year old brother. While another young boy fatally shot his mother through a car seat earlier this week.

Non uniform gun laws are being explored as the reason for rise in such incidents as well as other cultural factors such as norms surrounding gun ownership and use.

In his first weekly address of 2016, Barack Obama vowed to take action to tackle the growing epidemic of gun violence.
